I love Thailand. I was in Bangkok in 2008 and it was amazing. This time around i'm in Phuket for some relaxation at the Westin Suri Bay Resort. The resort is built on a hillside so everywhere you go you can be driven via tuk tuk or golf cart and trust me you need to be driven. Our suite was located on a 80 degree slope on the hill lol.
The resort is 5 star and offers private villas however it was a bit out of our price range but they were nice. There are 3 pools, 2 of which have the infiniti pools which is so cool to swim in. The resort is close to Phuket Town which we visited. The town is older and not modern at all but gives you a good sense of the life in this small area of Thailand. Patong, which is the party area reminds me of Wasaga beach with it's strip of stores along the beach. It's where all the foreigners are. They have a variety of hotels to choose from and a series of bars down one of the streets. When you walk by the bars you hear "buy one beer get a lady free" LMAO...it's crazy. We only walked the area during the day and didn't see the night life. Patong is 45 mins from our resort in the south so we didn't bother staying late.
John and I went on a sea canoeing trip and this is by far one of the best little adventures i've taken. They take us out to the Hong (Lagoon) Islands where they put us in canoes and take us into the caves within the mountains. It was surreal. You have to experience this. The pictures don't do it justice. Such a great experience and if you are ever here then do it or you will regret it. Our host for the day is a dead ringer for Morgan Freeman and he knew it haha. So although his name is Nick everyone just called him Morgan :D. They also gave us the canoes for ourselves in which John and i raced this Korean and Denmark couple to the beach....we won gold of course representing Canada hahaha. Free time i the ocean right before dinner was also pretty cool. Something about swimming in the ocean....so peaceful and revitilizing. The also taught us how to make this thing called a Kra Tong which is an offering to the sea god to thank her for the water. It's a peiece of banana tree designed with banada leaves and flowers with insense and candles. The insense was for Buddha and the candles represented long life. Part of the belief is that when you make the offerring your bad luck leave you and intot he water. It's learning about these traditions that make the trip worth it.
On our way back from Patong we decided to head to the shooting range to shoot some guns. I did this in Vegas and had a blast and it was no different in Phuket. I shot the .9mm which had a pretty strong recoil so i only got 55% compared to John's 62% lol. The sniper rifle was awesome. A lot better there with 82% however lost again to John's 88%. Finally we shot the clay pigeons. 10 shots and John didn't get one. I didn't fair that much better but i did manage to hit it with my last shot.
If Thailand is on anyones destination list i strongly recommend it. It's a beautiful country and worth the trip. You can't go wrong visiting Bangkok or Phuket.
