The place we are staying at on Ko Lanta is awesome. Kantiang Bay View Resort is by far the best place we've stayed so far. Part of what has made it so great is the group of guys that work at the "Why Not?" Bar. So. Much. Fun. Our first night here we had dinner at Why Not. Its owned by different people than the Kantiang Restaurant but they work together side by side and help each other out. Our two favourite people here at Why Not are Chad and Ali…or Ali Babwa as he likes to say. Nothing has made me laugh more lately than hearing Chad say Mike's name… "Miiiiye". He cant pronounce my name very well so he doesn't say it really…it comes out as "Ah-wee"…kinda like how Travis used to say my name when he was 2. But when hearing "Miiye you go home now?" or "How u today Miiiye?" makes me smile and laugh so hard inside.
So the first night at Why Not we were very entertained by great music and Ali singing high-pitch and stomping around the floor with a tambourine. He wears gigantic, clown-like over-sized sunglasses and plays some flute instrument with his nose. We laugh pretty much the whole time we are there. The guys here all have really long hair except Chad…and I suspect that they are part of the Cha-ley ppl that live on Ko Lanta. (Apparently most of the ppl on Ko Lanta are sea-gypsies, or daughters and sons and grand-kids of sea-gipsies.) Also, at Why Not, they do fire shows that are waaaay better than any that we saw on Ko Phangan or Ko Tao.
Lastnight we were there again and there was a large group of Swedish guys singing to all the songs. They play tons of good stuff here. Ben Harper, Metallica (mike digs this of course), dire straites, beatles, sublime, bob marley, tracey chapman, eagles, coldplay, chili peppers. The Bohemian Rhapsody song came on last night and the whole place was singing to it. (I thought of Trav and how this is our favourite song to sing together. Makes me laugh!) Mike tries to play the flute with his nose and is successful. We talk with an English guy from Brighton. His name is Daniel and he's out on his own for the night. He has a pregnant wife, 1 year old and 3 year old in the resort next to us. We were so shocked that they would travel like that. With two little kids and another one on the way in May. Mike and I think he's crazy to vacation to Thailand like that, but he's a cool guy and we talk with him most of the night. There's also two girls from England that we end up singing songs with…mostly trying to remember lyrics. Chad, Ali and all the other staff bring out guitars and start to play Hotel California and everyone sings. They played tons of thai songs too that none of us 'farang' (farang=foreign) understood but they were beautiful. During this time I was thinking how much I wished I could get everyone I know from back home to be on the beach with us so they could enjoy the moments we were having with these guys. It was a super great amazing time.
The last few nights have just been too much fun that Mike and I both end up feeling a bit rough around the edges today. Mike is back at our bungalow resting right now (at 1130am) hehe…and Ive sworn to stick to water, fruit and veggies for the day. The fruit here is the best Ive ever had. I don't normally like pineapple but I do now. And the mangoes here are so flipping good. Kantiang also makes a sweet coffee shake. It puts Starbucks to shame. This morning I had a lemon shake and it was heaven. They serve all their shakes with orchids on the edge of the glass. So many orchids! And I keep thinking how in Vancouver a drink with an orchid would cost something like 8-12$. And were getting them for under a dollar.
The food at Kantiang has been good, like everywhere else…except we never know what were gonna get. We had fish and chips last night…with tartar sauce. Tartar sauce= hot sweet and sour sauce. We ordered prawns in garlic with rice and got fried squid in bbq sauce. ?
The beach here on Kantiang Bay is really nice. There are little white crabs that run SO fast…I try to catch them and they end up hiding between my feet thinking they are safe there. Hehe…then really quickly they seem to camo themselves in the sand…and then when I move they find a near by hole and disappear. We've swam once so far here but the current is strong so we don't go really far out, plus there are some rocky areas in patches and this makes us not want to go in too deep. Theres also some pockets, like big holes under water that creep us out and makes us dog paddle so we don't have to feel whats down there. There was another couple, American I think, that were doing the same thing as Mike and I, only they were more brave and swam out passed the rocks and holes to find a sandier spot. There are also tiny little jelly fish that we cant see, but we can feel them cause every so often u feel a little sting on your leg. But it's the smallest sting and u cant feel it after 5 minutes.
Our bungalow feels more like home than the other places we've stayed. Its got the thatched bamboo sides and tin roof (that feels like it might fly off when the wind is strong)…the hut isn't nice. But it is at the same time. Getting used to the toilet in there now and we enjoy the cold shower here because it is so much hotter on Ko Lanta than any of the other islands we've been so far. It's so hot, that we both have sweat on our foreheads first thing when we step outside. So I welcome the cold shower very much.
Last night I was really happy because Why Not was playing the "I am Sam" soundtrack…all Beatles covers. Across the Universe came on and it made my night. During it I saw something really weird in the sky. I wanted to see a shooting star so I knelt in the sand and looked up (my neck hurt so much after this)…after staring at the stars for a short time I saw what I thought might be a satellite? But not? It was like a satellite, but it was moving faster. And then it would slow down. And then it zig zagged in the sky and disappeared. Really weird. Maybe someone knows what the heck it was?!?
Anyways, should probably head off here…gonna go lay on the beach today for a bit and then maybe nap. Oh life here is so tough. maah! ;)
Before I go, must make a note that in the last entry I wrote, offexploring blocked me from saying the word 'p r i ck ling' - so if anyone was wondering…that's what the *stars* were about.
And one more thing about photos…we wont be posting any while we are away because, snap-happy photo-freak that I am, it would take a ridiculous amount of time to load the shots that ive taken so far because im up to something like 850+ right now. Good thing I brought two memory cards. When we get back though, I promise that within the first week all of them will be online for ppl to see. Im even thinking of doing a website for the trip that will be on my current website. If I try and get out of doing it, someone has to hold me to it and make sure I follow through though, okay?! J
Adios!
