2nd Sept 2009
Right now, I am finding it extremely difficult to not sing out loud on the plane! Listening to Maximo Park on my sexy new laptop is the perfect accompaniment to the vast sea I am flying over at the moment; and in the background a pure gold sunset horizon. Just 30 minutes of my first flight left, and I am so pleased that I feel much happier and far more excited!
This morning I felt sick to the core and I felt that every nerve within me was shaking. After all the preparation and goodbyes it still doesn't feel like I am going to be away for a year - it's far too surreal to get my head around. Knowing me, I'll never understand how long I am actually away for, but will take each week as it comes, and before I know it, I'll be on my way home! It's now quite dark outside, and I can see lights from buildings as we arrive in Abu Dhabi, although it is apparently still 35oc! I am so not mentally ready for such heat, especially not at half seven in the evening!
The last couple of weeks have been amazing, lots of celebration! Obviously, as a full time chef, I've been working a hell of a lot. I am extremely gutted to have left my job at Vatika, Wickham Vineyard. I loved my position as head pastry chef, but the handover has gone well and I wish the best of luck to Ryan who has taken over from me. I'm going to miss the whole team at Vatika, every single one of them extremely talented and friendly. If they are reading this, it was an absolute pleasure to work with you; you guys and the concept behind Vatika is fantastic!
TOUCH DOWN!
I have arrived in Abu Dhabi!
So excited to see my friends Art and Mo when I come through the arrivals gate! These people have been the best support and help for my arrival and stay in UAE.
…So I am now in bed at my new 'home' - this place is incredible - it is situated within a compound, nice private swimming pool, my own room with en-suite, it is just stunning - high ceilings, marble floors, everything you need - including plenty of space! I don't think I should get to used to this - I'll be in a hostel tomorrow night, probably without air con as well!
The heat when I stepped off the plane was like being stood next to a giant generator that was overheating. Immediately I felt a little clammy, but apparently what I felt isn't humidity! At the moment I have my air con set to 29oc and I'm comfortable at that, because outside is just ridiculous!
The plane journey was very smooth and enjoyable; slept a little, watched a movie, listened to some music, and looked outside the window a lot (it is truly fantastic looking at each countries contours as you fly over). When the plane set off from Heathrow, I couldn't get close enough to the window; I had clung hold of my arm rest very tightly, not wanting to miss any chance of saying goodbye to home (I was even looking out for the spinnaker tower!) Tears trickled down my face.
The food wasn't too bad either! I had a mixed salad with vinaigrette to start. I joked with myself quoting "where's the Maldon!?" Then cottage pie - very yummy and well seasoned; and to finish, a delightful chocolate mousse cake. I was extremely impressed! Later came sandwiches and cake.
Tomorrow, I am off out to the souq (shop) with Mo and then going to explore a little while Mo treats herself to a manicure. After this, we will arrange a car to take me to Dubai in the afternoon. I am then staying there for just over a week. If I get a chance tomorrow I would also like to explore the compound and its private beach, and maybe have a dip in my private pool!
Here's to the next year!
Love
Ashleigh xx
