sat 14th-this morning i was up bright n early despite the previous nights exploits! did some much needed shopping and finally, got myself some jeans and a hat (a nice one with yellow pigtails!) back to the hostel where i started on my fantasy footy team and then meet up with the gang down at the foodcourt for a cheap chinese for lunch. did f*** all in the afternoon, and then went to the cinema with them to see harry potter 5- yeah!!! the film flowed nicely, a tad short but still worked nicely and a thoroughly good flick. ppl had to get sorted for their buses the next day so there was no beer tonite :-(
sun 15th- lie in today and then met up with andy and christophe to sort out kang island trip. we decided upon a 5day/ 4 night trip round the island and it still cost less than a 2d/1n trip with a company AND we get to cycle the island! nowt else during the day save pool, numerous cups of tea and an afl/ CSI double bill!
mon 16th- decided to wander the streets of adelaide to get a feel for the place. went towards the par 3 golf course and played a double round- shot a pretty good score considering its been a while, but it was short! ate lunch and then went over to glenelg to see the beach; had a good little walk along the prom and saw sunset over the horizon. nowt special but it helped kill a few hrs, and is better than watchin tv!
tues 17th- the start of kang island! caught the transfer bus to cape jarvis and the ferry across to penneshaw. the weather wasnt the best of things but the journey across was ok. got our bikes from the yha for $80 and went off, at the advice of mrs yha, to cape willoughby and the lighthouse there. the journey wasn't too bad at first, the dirt roads were a b**** but bearable. the bloody hills started to annoy me after a while. we got to the lighthouse by lunch and enjoyed the view. the return towards parndana was the prob, those hills and dirt roads turned into a nightmare when the wind and rain combined to make our lives hell. we cycled like troopers and got nowhere and found out our desires to make it to parndana were a pipedream. in the end we crashed in the garage of a really nice lady who ran a BnB for 25 each, not the best but it was a bed! travelled today: 80km (50km unsealed roads!)
weds 18th- could be summed in a few words...eat;cycle;eat;cycle;eat;shower;sleep. to add some more weight to the day we set off after making a stop in american river for money towards kaiwara food barn a total of 60km before lunch. the roads were reasonably flater after 90mins, and the weather was perfect for cycling, not too hot or windy and we made excellent progress gettin to our goal by 1pm. a quick stop and back on the road to make the remaining 60km to flinders chase farm before nightfall, the beginning was easy but as the day wore on and our legs began to tire it got a lot harder. in the end we didnt reach our destination till 6 and a long time after night fall! but the place we stayed at was awesome, 25 for a bed, the dorm was empty and the kitchen was full of 'free' food! showered, eat pasta and crashed out really- it was a long day. travelled today: 120km total travelled: 200km (50km unsealed roads)
thurs 19th- free brekkie thanks to the hostel. spoke to the ppl in charge and asked whether they could take us to kingscote the next day, thus giving us an easy day today and a chance to see more of the national park..luckily they could so we had a nice start to the day and set off to the national park. the trip down to the lighthouse and admirals arch was good thou a little too downhill for our liking and we found out our decision to not buy choc was a mistake! anyway the trip down there was good, and the views of the sea and the sealions was wicked. it was amazing to see the arch and how they have formed; added to the grace of the sealions swimming thru the waves etc was pretty cool. a quick trip over to weirs cove and the old lighthouse quarters was an experience, these guys lived in total wilderness and only received supplies every 3months IF the weather permitted it! not phone, tv or first aid kit either! finally we made it to the remarkable rocks, which were just like their name said-remarkable. they are formed by the same process as uluru and kata tjuta and just as impressive. the size of the things is amazing and after we ate gave us some respite from the cycling! the cycle back to bunker hill (a pre-determined stop) was hell but we just about made it in one piece, the gradient was ridiculous and long but the stop gave us a nice rest and the cycle back wasn't hard at all, a lot easier that expected really. back to the hostel where we realised that the 'free' food was actually bought by a tour group and we stole it! there were a few choice lies spoken so we didnt get told off and i think we survived it! sleep was a nice reward for the day again. travelled today: 65km total travelled: 265km (50km on unsealed roads)
fri 20th- a very nice start with verity taking us round the north island's beaches in her ute with our bikes in the back. we stopped off at snellings beach, the hidden beach at stokes bay and finally emu bay before she dropped us off at kingscote- the journey was over 100km and meant we could see a lot more of the island! we left kingscote nice and early and made good progress prospect hill and pennington bay for lunch. the hill gave us an excellent view of the south west beaches and pelican lagoon- only prob was the 512 steps up to get there! it was worth it thou! the beach stop was nice too and inc some surfers! the last 20km was going well until the previous days rides caught up with us going up hills and towards penneshaw. but there was a good little stop at sunset winery for a free wine tasting and we bought some sparkling shiraz which was gonna be our treat for that evening. arrived back to the hostel totally kanckered and just bummed round for the rest of the night. watched some afl action and then went to see the penguins which wander around the beach at night! travelled today: 67km total travelled: 332km (50km on unsealed roads!)
sat 21st-jumped on the first ferry back to the mainland, and arrived back by 11. dumped stuff off at the hostel and went back to town to buy harry potter and a footy ticket. the first was a success but they only had turnstile tickets left so i had to hotfoot it to the stadium and hopefully get a ticket. luckily there were many left, but a nice lady gave me her spare season ticket so i got in for $5! alas the crows lost by 24 pts but it was a good experience. totally diff from normal footy, a total lack of atmosphere unless a team scored and a mix of fans together- weird huh? back into town, ate and then met up with andy n christophe before they went to melbourne, had time for a beer and then read some harry before bed!
