Allie's European Adventure
I hope everyone had a good weekend. This weekend, myself, and my friends Chrissy, Mike, Andrew, and Brent went to Belgium. After suffering through a 6 hour delay thanks to Ryan Air, we arrived in Belgium around 6PM. And after a variety of modes of transportion arrived in Brugge!Brugge is really cool - if you've seen the movie you got the basic idea of what it looks like. Brugge, because their sea port dried up, was kind of abandoned by developers and never went through the Industrial Revolution. So, being there is like being in an old town. We got into Brugge at about 10PM and hit up a restaurant immeditately because we were so starving. I got a big bowl of mussels which were delicious. My friend got ostrich steak, which I tried, and it was pretty good. The next day we had waffles (of course) for breakfast - and did some walking around. We even walked up the big tower in Market Square. Afterwards, we went on a bike tour out of Brugge, through the country side, and to the neighboring town Damme. It was really cool, and a huge contrast from life in Rome. It was nice to get out into the country air a bit. Our tour guide was cool, and he was very informative about Brugge and the history of the area. He's very involved in Brugge, and even spent two days in jail for protesting the McDonald's that was built in Brugge (needless to say, there is no mcdonalds now!) We all stopped and got a beer on our bike ride back. We got Krike, which is a belgian cherry beer. It was delicious because it basically tasted like cherry soda. For dinner, we went to a restaurant our guide recommended, and i got a Steak kabob with an excellent baked potato.Sunday was conviently one of the three days that Brugge has "Car free" day in the summer. There was lots of outdoor events, and all the museums were free. I went to the art museum in the morning to see some of the famous "Flemish Primative" paintings, like Jan Van Eyck. It was really cool. We all met back together and visited a convent where nuns make lace and walked through a park. After that - it was back home to Rome! Luckily the flight was on time!It was a great trip though, the town was really cool, and for our first trip away from Rome it was successful. Next trip: October 3rd to Oktober fest! Oh boy!
