Hi all Gem here....
Just got back into Chang Mai after a 3 day hill tribe trek, honestly so much to tell don't know where to begin, we have done a Thai cooking class which was very cool, I can know make Thai Green Curry, Ash could hardly eat anything as she hates anything spicey, I cleverly ate my Chilli thinking it was a spring onion and burnt off half my tongue and developed fever symptons for a while! Next day we headed out to a water fall which we could swim in and was v.v.v. cold, first swim in a waterfall so exciting! women have to dress modestly so we have to wear these really unattractive sarong things when bathing around Thais or not in the water, wait till you see photos they are hilarious! Next we headed up into the hills and it has to be the most horendous journey ever, forget straight roads and concrete it was almost to much for my travel tablets!!! When we finally got to our starting point we started treking through the jungle! Saw a few birds and plants and Nath impressed us with his stick jumping skills! We got to the first village where we would be staying that night and it was in the middle of nowhere, very pretty and something you would see on the telly but never actually imagine seeing, the first night was so incredibly cold we slept in these very basic huts and I had rented a sleeping bag which was useless! The village children loved us and took us on a tour of their village, every hut has a pig tied up underneath if they have a child and I have never seen so many dogs and chickens in all my life! In terms of toilet facilities they were basic to say the least, no actual seat, no flush and no running water. For the girls it was a case of crouching over the top and wishing for the best! Which we have now become expert at! But hey thats what travelling is all about!
After waking early we started the trek to the elephants! And it was amazing, we could touch them and feed them and they were so placid. Mine and Naths was called Simon and Ash and Toms Leroy! We went on a ride with them down the river, which was very interesting as when they go down hill you actually have to hang on with dear life! Our elephant despite its name was actually a girl and 40years old and incredibly lazy, we got overtaken by all the others and eneded up brining up the rear! After saying a sad goodbye to the elephants we went to our next village, this one we didnt get to look around as we headed straight to the river for a swim and a wash! (This was there idea of cleaning facilities) A cosy night was then spent with all 12 of us shareing a hut after being entertained by one of our guides who we think was smoking/eating opium as he was as completly out of it! It grows wild in the forests and when we were treking he kept disapearing off! Today we have been bamboo rafting, Nath fell in which was hilarious! Saw lots more elephants along the river!
Got to go as am off to dinner, but dont worry about the Bangkok situation, we are heading back there tomorrow but it is only for the day and we will be on trains which arent effected. 3 of our friends who leave the trek tomorrow are completly stuck tho along with every other english speaking person we seem to meet!
Photos will be up as soon as we get used to this internet cafe situaution! Bit confusing still at the mo!
Love to you all!!!
