Okay so we didn't acutally see the changing of the guards (which is what is happening in this photo) but we did see a heck of a lot of police officers in riot gere. As we got closer and closer to Omonia square they became more numerous. We wlanted to know what was up but thought it may not be the greatest of ideas to approach police in a country that we don't know if you are actually allowed to talk to them or not. Add to that a possible language berrier and you have yourself an imprisonned tourist.
After paying for our flight to Rome we went down to the New Acropolis Museum. There was this really neat section as you entered the museum (and in it too) with a glass floor that allowes visitors to see ruins or an excavation sight from above. It took me a while but at the end of the trip I finally stepped on it. I have a picture to prove it...which will be posted...someday. Also, something interesting that I learnt on this visit: Athena was born after someone took an axe to Zeus' head and split it in half. Interesting birth story eh?
We then made our way to the absolutely cute Museum of Greek Folk Art. It was only 1 Euro (BIG bonus). They had so many different traditional dresses as well as house ornaments and such. Something I learnt here: in a certain region of Greece (I forget which one unfortunately) inheritance laws allow wives to keep their land that they had before marriage. The husband's land goes to the oldest son, the wive gives hers to the oldest daughter and other children have to divid property that was bought after the wedding.
Next stop: The Greek Jewish Museum. At first we weren't sure we had the right place (even though there was a plaque on the front of the building that confirmed). It was in what looked like a beautiful older house with a gate that was only semi open and we had to ring a bell to get it. It was beautiful and informative. Again, me sharing some of what I learnt (but only vague details because after so much info everything starts to get mixed up). During the second world war, when the Germans were sending Jewish people to concentration camps, there were two influencial people from a certain island who decided that they were not going to write the names of the Jewish individuals but instead they wrote only their own along with a letter to Hilter and apparently that worked because no one from that community was deported to a camp.
Then we had quite the adventure. We were going to go to Parliament BUT there was some sort of street cleaning which spread some stuff in the air that burnt the face and the lungs so we got out of there. We hadl quite a hard time finding the ancian cemetry and whlen we finally did it was closed :( THEN the transit drivers went on strike so we walked all the way to our hostel. Good times.
Needless to say, tonight won't be a verly late night either. Toodaloo loves.
