So Prague was both mine and Ariane's favourite city so far. Honestly. The buidings are old and in great condition, there is so much history, and it is pretty affordable.
Our hostel happened to be right in the old town square which was great. It meant we didn't have to buy any transportation tickets. I was so excited when we were told our room was 19, I figured this meant it was on the first floor. Wrong. It was on the 4th floor (but in Europe the first floor doesn't start until after the lobby so it was like the 5th floor). Just like two mins away from our place there was this jazz festival so after seeing a toture instrument museum we just chilled in the square listening to some music.
On the first day we took a free guided tour. Our guide, Jeff, was absolutely amazing. He knew his stuff and was able to make the tour super entertaining. i think someone who doesn't like history would even have enjoyed it. On this tour we saw a lot of different things like the Sqaure, some churches (one of which has the super old bone of a thief hanging from up high as a warning to others...do not steal from the catholic church), the Jewish quarters, the astrological clock, etc. Then we made our way to the Museum of Communism. It was really informative and I really liked seeing the old propaganda. It was cool because a few things we were reading on the signs were actually said during our tour! When we were left I was just left with an uneasy feeling. I don't think it is because I am super left wing and was outraged because it was a misrepresentation or anything like that but like it would be amunition to those who are like blahblahblah the evils of communism blahblahblah...like I left with the feeling that someone would be like wow democracy is perfect...I don't know maybe this is not the place for such discussions anyways ahha. Then we ended our night with a ghost walk. Our guide again was super great. She was very theatrical. They also had people dressed up to run and scare us.
The next day we went to a castle. It was just outside of Prague and we took a tour there. It was good to have a guide however the rooms were too small for the 50 people on the tour. A lunch was included. It was deepfried. Mine was deepfried cheese ahha sounds healthy right? Then we went to a beer tasting where I finished my first ever beer! True story. Here are a few things we learnt. Czech Republic is the country that drinks the most beer per capita (numbers varied depending on the source but up to 160 L per capita), that the foam is actually a good thing (it lets you know that it is fresh and the pipes are clean and so is the glass), that the Church used to be in charge of beer production and so on and so forth. It was really good.
On our last day in Prague we went to a midevil mining town and an ossurary. Our guide was intense. She had to do the tour in three languages. There was only a short stop at the ossurary which was okay. It was kind of spooky. Basically, it is an old chapel (that is no longer in use) which serves as a mass grave for 40 000 people and the bones were our in the open. I don't know how it could ever have been in use. That would have had to have been for devil worship mang. Then we went to this musem of ghosts and legends. It was more spooky than the toture instruments because we kept on expecting for something to jump out at us but that never happened. We then went out with someone from our hostel and signed a shirt with something aobut love for a guy in our hostel (his girlfriend asked him to do something special for her).
Our train ride to Berlin was crazy. It was packed and seats were reserved but it wasn't marked anywhere so we kept having to play musical chairs. Then Ariane and I got seperated because I was in someone's seat so me and this british guy were sitting on these seats in the hall part of the train but the ticket lady told us to go to another car. Sure enough, two cards down we found two seats and chilled there. I was super afraid to get off at a different stop than Ariane but thankgoodness that didn't happen.
Now we are in Berlin, staying in our super secret hostel (no one seems to have heard of it) but it is super cute here so that is good.
Will update about today and tomorrow tomorrow :)
