November 1-3, 5 2009- Bath, UK- Katherine and Maurice's Apartment in the Circus
Not many can say they have spent nights in a gallery, and their days walking in a painting, but from my experience in Bath I can say both.
The warm Georgian architecture of Bath, the peace and tranquility of the tourist town sleeping for the winter, was exactly what I needed after the hustle and bustle of London. So remarkable about this place was the fact that even the modern was made to look old so that nothing seemed out of place- a perfection that was almost too good to be true. I label it the light side of Charles Dickens.
Katherine and Maurice tour me around the town, including the site of the gallery that they are to open in the city Centre (hence why all the art in the living room where I stay in the flat). Their vision is incredible, their passion evident- I hope to see the fruit of their efforts complete when I make my way back through England on return.
The amazing chandelier clad Assembly rooms, the picturesque Abbey- the setting of a moving "Remembrance Day" tribute, the Roman Baths where I sampled the mineral water, the Circus and the Royal Crest- residential archetypes of the Coliseum, the lovely sides streets and twisting alleys leaving something to appreciate at every turn. Walking along the river Avon, taking pictures of the Pulteney Bridge, I am, no pun intended, bathed in rejuvenation- calmed as always by being near the water- and evermore so in a place of great beauty.
Fitting that my last evening in Bath ended in fireworks, literally. Guy Fawkes, the celebration of the long past foiled attempt to burn the Parliament in London brings many nights of private and public firework displays. We were fortunate to catch what I now give the honor of "best fireworks yet" in the Bath rugby stadium.
Such serenity and picturesque quality could have been enough, but this experience was most notable for the people that I stayed with. Katherine and Maurice took me in and made me feel at home from the very instant I came. I believe I drank at least 10 times my body weight in tea as we sat discussing everything from religion and politics to art and childhood memories. I appreciate the opportunity to share and strengthen my faith, to reflect upon the current state of our country while appreciating what it is that makes us great. Laughing, challenging, discussing and above all respecting one another. I leave Bath having made two wonderful friends.
Cheers,
Emily
