April's Travels
Walu Beach Resort.
Finally we arrive at an island which looks just as you expect Fiji to look. It's the perfect setting. Crystal waters and islands dotted around, the tiny islands with their sandy beaches around the edge. One island was just a sand dune with not even a palm tree on it. Walu was in a gorgeous setting. It was a kind of 5* backpacker resort. We had a free upgrade to a lodge which was fab.
On the boat ride there we started chatting to a guy travelling on his own called Olly he was really sweet bless him so we took him under our wing for the few days he was there. We sun bathed and had a few cocktails. On the second day Olly took us out sailing on a double hull boat. Three of us were on this tiny boat all strapped in our life jackets. It took a while to get going due to the lack of wind, finally we caught it and flew off out to sea. We were riding along with the waves so we got some good speed up. We sailed out to the little island opposite then headed for an island further out to the right of Walu. We reached it no problem but getting back was a different story.
We tried to turn around but there wasn't enough wind because we were kind of in an alcove. We ended up on some rocks, oops and were just getting nowhere, me and Becs were giggling at each other although i'm thinking help i'm either going to get washed out to sea or eaten by a shark. After a while we got rescued by a speed boat from Walu who happened to see us. All was going well until he thought we were on our way again, he sped off back to shore and we got stuck straight back in the alcove again. Olly decided to try a drastic measure, well one he thought would work. He hadn't sailed since he was about 11 which was about 10 years ago, great. He sailed us straight out to sea because the sails would then catch the wind, but turning back towards Walu was a problem because we were heading against the waves. It took forever, i had the waves washing over me constantly which i found hilarious. Then rescue boat two came out, it was like a comedy sketch. Only problem was he just kept telling us which way to go, even i could work out where we should be heading, we just couldn't get there. So then he sped off with me shouting after him. We got going in the end, two hours later we calmly floated back to the beach. Great fun.
That night a big group of us had beers and all sorts and played drinking games including 'ring of fire' my party people at home. Had a late night swim in the pool and then crashed out. The next day was spent sun bathing and snorkelling which was really good. Lots of fishes!! Becs had a few issues with her snorkelling gear. She nearly got strangled in her life jacket trying to take it off while we were out snorkelling, her mask broke and just about everything else but hey nothing new there.
The next day we left for Beachcomber for Becky's birthday.
