April's Travels
Hello people, i am back on line!!
I've now been in lovely lovely Fiji for 2 weeks, and it's been action pack. Now at some points throughout these postcards i may start to sound as though i get myself into nothing but scrapes, i blame becky for this!!
We started off in Nadi to get over the middle of the night flight from Cook Islands. Spent a day lazing around the pool. Then we set off early morning on the local bus to Sigatoka the sand dunes which were reported to be a highlight of Fiji. We got in a tourist mini bus which was more like a death trap. We sat on plastic seat covers in the swealtering heat and the driver clearly thought he was of formula one standard only he was driving a 1954 model mini bus. I nearly stumbled to the front of the mini bus to give him a piece of my mind but couldn't make it there. I did a lot of praying on that ride. Still we made it to the sand dunes, had to walk to them through a really humid forest and had flip flops on AGAIN. You would think i would have learnt after Mexico. Squelched through a big bogged area. Then we climbed a huge sand dune and walked across some more which were set right next to the sea. This reads as a lot more picturesque than it was. It looked like a dodgy beach in England with a few grassy/sandy hills. I guess i am a little more biased after the sand dunes in Death Valley at sunset. The problem about travelling is you get really picky with what you see.
Afterwards we got back in the death trap, luckily we were sat in the front, i was prepared to be a a nag and tell him he ought to slow down if necessary but he was better on the way back!!
Next we were off to Suva. It's another city, really functional, half the population are Indian and it looks just like i remember cities in India. Not at all like i thought. I quite liked the gritty hustle and bustle for a bit though. We checked into a motel and spent the day doing chores which consisted of laundry, downloading photos, shopping for a holdel, toiletries, writing and posting postcards, see travelling isn't all fun you know.......of course i'm joking, it's a blast!! The weather was really stormy, we went for afternoon tea (you can take the girl out of England but you'll never take the England out of the girl!!) in a Holiday Inn overlooking the harbour which was beautiful. There were lots of mountains across the bay and the storm rolled in over them, it was fab. I have piccys to go on soon.
That night we went out for curry, i still had a stinking cold which i got in America but which came to visit me again on the flight to Fiji, i was really really snotty (getting a nice vision??) so i was determined to blast it out with a hot curry.
Becky was having a paranoia attack of bugs all afternoon, so she thought she saw something scuttle behind her in the curry house, great, i was then sat with my back to a window with my feet up on the chair. Then she shreaked again but it was the bead from her bracelet so i'm thinking you dumb bum, chill out. We order a vindaloo, rogan josh and loads of other bits and bobs, couple of beers yummy!! The next thing i know Becky is shouting "mouse mouse" and pointing behind me. It ran along the back of the seat i was on and up the curtain behind my head. I tried to shoot off the seat but couldn't find my flip flops so was squealing like the girl i am. We shot out of the booth. The staff were obviously cool as cucumber. We must be getting hardened though because all we did was change tables and wait for our food. Impressed........well it's good for us!! The food was fantastic. Nice and spicy, so so good!!
The next day we left for Nananu I Ra Island. We stayed there in a little beach cottage. It was again stunning, not how you would picture Fiji, looked more like i imagine Scotland. Lots of green lushous mountains in the setting of a lake. We had a couple of nights there, sat out, cooked for ourselves, drunk beer, the resort next door did really yummy chocolate cake so i was happy!! The electricity was switched off at 10pm so we would have to leave ourselves little chores like painting our nails with the lantern when it went dark. It was so quiet and peaceful there we got told off a couple of times for talking to much at night. We were keeping everyone up.....and we were in our own cottage!!!
It did feel like we were the happy couple there because it was so quiet. We played with a couple of young children from New Zealand on the beach, i got bullied by the girl tee hee. She was building sand castles and i was telling them to dig holes and make a moat and things to which she asked "April can you dig a hole?", "Yes" i replied to which her response was"Well go on then." Fair comment!!
The first morning there we were told there was an earthquake in Tonga which is another island in the South Pacific, it was in the ocean and measured 8 on the richter scale. Ther was a Tsunami report across Fiji and they were going to wake us up to evacuate early morning although it turned out to be ok. That day the weather was really stormy, we lazed in hammocks, it was really overcast and thinking i was in the shade i didn't have any sun tan lotion on so burnt my front oops!! Never be fooled by a cloudy day!
All night the lightening ripped around the sky, so cool to watch. We got in our little boat back to the main land early morning and travlled back on again around to Nadi. We had done a complete circuit of the main island. The road to Nadi was interesting. Really rough terrain, we were on a big bus this time snaking up the sides of mountains with no barriers and going across tiny wooden bridges over rivers. You couldn't see the bridge when you were on it only the water it was hysterical. Saw lots of little Fijiian villiages and people. I love seeing how people in other cultures live.
Back in Nadi we organised the next week of visits to the Mamanuca islands. We set off for Robinson Crusoe island the next day. Queue the second postcard.
