Been a very, very weird day.. Arrived in Butterworth station, Penang at about half 1 and were planning to hang around the station until wir next train at 11pm. But as soon as we'd sat down we were approached by a taxi driver who seemed to think it was a waste of a day and that we NEEDED to see Penang island. He spoke away telling wis how he does day tours for 250 ringgit (about £50) but that since we didna have a whole day we could pay less. We managed to persuade him to take wis for a run for 80 ringgit (£16) and we set off in the taxi. He took us over the bridge to the island, yapping away about various things we were seeing and customers he'd had. We got really quite hungry and asked for him to take us somewhere cheap. Well. What we ended up with, was a bowl of incredibly sweet coconut milk, slubbery green noodles, kidney beans and what I'm pretty sure was just a massive lump of crystallised sugar. And it was stone cold. Karis took a photo of me eating it and my face says it all. We've never laughed so much the whole trip though.
After that peerie detour, he took wis to a temple with a massive Buddhist statue right at the top and loads of peerie stalls all the way up, so that was nice if a bit tiring after wir lack of sleep and food.
We spent most of the rest of the time just driving around, seeing the island and listening to his stories afore we went back across, on the ferry this time, to the mainland.
We took another quick detour for the driver to do another taxi run which he decided we might as well come along on.
All day he was asking wis questions about how we liked Asia and the Asian folk. I told him that most of them were really nice but a couple had tried to overcharge/scam wis out of wir money. He was extremely apologetic about this and decided to buy wir denner to make up for it, afore putting wis back to the train station. So basically we paid £8 each to spend around five hours getting a taxi tour around the island which included a free meal with a couple of Malaysian taxi drivers. Like I say, weird day. But a good day. Then it was back on the train and off to Kuala Lumpur!
