Gday from Oz
Well I've been here for just over 2 weeks and have been busy. I started in Melbourne which I have decided is good enough place for me to move to. It has a lovely vibe to the place, lots of cafe culture and arts markets to ponder. It also seems to be the city of events. . I had just missed the grand prix but was there when the World Fina swimming championships the international flower festival, a food and wine festival all taking place at the same time. So I did river cruises, trips to the Dandenong Ranges, Koala conservation centre and have even enjoyed billy tea (obviously in english style with my little pinkie sticking out). Anyone whose been to Phillip island will understand how magical the evening trip is to sit at dusk and wait for the little penguins to all come ashore in their droves to find their safe digs for the night. You just need to avoid the many many tourists that have no idea how to behave around wildlife. I finished my days in Melboune off with a 2 day trip along the Great Ocean Road, like any good tourist. It was a good few days, just 6 of us in the group visiting Apollo Bay, London Bridge, Lorne etc along the way. The scenery is as stunning as it is in the books but they dont show you the gusts of wind that make you feel as if you are walking the cliffs of Cornwall on a autumn day.
From Melbourne I flew to Adelaide which was disappointing but the vineyard trip to Barossa valley was well worth the effort. Plenty of winetasting helped cheer me up, including tasting some from 164 year old vines. From there to Kangaroo Island for a few days 4wd offroading adventures seeing oh so many koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, seals etc. The island is amazing for seeing native wildlife in its natural form, not behind bars and fences.
From there i flew to Perth which was OK for the one day I spent there (glad its not much more) and now I'm in Exmouth on the west coast where I have just frantically tried to keep up swimming with the biggest fish in the world, the whale sharks. Had a fantastic day spotting them and then jumping in to swim beside them before they head off. We were lucky enough to spot the largest of this season so far at 10m long. I was booked to go again today but the swell of over 5m meant the trip was cancelled so on easter sunday i have sat in Exmouth busy town centre (4 shops and a petrol station) doing pretty much nothing in 36 deg heat. But tomorrow I am off back to civilsation, well Perth anyway, for a trip to Fremantle. I'm down to less than 4 weeks til I'm home now, so if anyone is missing me dont worry I'll be home soon to bore you with tales of 20m long whale sharks (yep they will grow even longer before I'm home). Much Love Annie x
