Kia Orana from Rarotonga, Cook Islands. Well I've spent 7 hard days here, doing virtually nothing. Mainly as the pace of life here is rather slow. The islands are beautiful, just like the postcards but the downside is I arrived at the end of a very wet, almost cyclone period. No idea how the pilot landed the plane in the torrential storms - waves were coming over the breakwater onto the runway, nice. Thankfully it stopped the following night but not before the shower in my beautiful hut exploded throwing sewage across the bathroom. Lovely welcome to Rarotonga. So after moving rooms twice more I found a lovely one with my own giant crab living in my garden. I have tried adding the noise a crab makes to my Annabelle Farm impersonation list but it needs some work. In my excitment of wanting to tour the island - all 32km of it, I signed up for a 4wd safari. It was great fun, offroading towards the highlands, visiting old villages etc, until the whole Cook Island population of mosquitos found my still prestine white skin and decided to have a 9 course meal. I looked great I can tell you. But the views from the safari were stunning, even the look down on the prison for all teh islands. It has 26 inmates and 25 guards...and as a local you can hire a prisoner for the day to do whatever you like. Now can you imagine that in good old blighty?! They have 1 TV channel and its dominated by local preachers, but sorry Rarotonga you havent converted me.
Much to my brothers annoyance no doubt, Keith the Salsa dancing pig was eaten - well it was him or me, they were cannibals until recently. However he has been ably replaced by Sid the Kitesurfing seacucumber. I let him keep all the tips from the tourists so he buy his favourite muffins.
I have been adopted by a mad couple from Alberta (thats Canada to you lesser travelled people), Grant and Cindy. They seem to think I'm some form of entertainment. Grant insults me and I throw them back - just like being in the office. They have generously accompanied me to lunch and dinner every day since I got here. So no time to be lonely here.
However my time here has come to an end, I have had some great snorkelling, including being chased by an angry trigger fish - he was huge, well everything is magnified under water. I've also met Jordie the giant puffer fish, he was charming. So despite the bad weather early on it has been beautiful every since. Next stop Fiji.
