Most of today was spent sleeping, and when I did eventually surface I pottered around, sorting through my luggage – seeing what was lucky enough to make it into my suitcase, doing a bit of washing and sending mum and dad an email to let them know I was alive and well. Later on, we loaded into the car and headed for “Cow Town” in Fort Worth for the Stockyards Championship Rodeo. It felt like I was visiting the “Wild West” land in Disney Land (for any readers who have not been – Disney Land is divided into different themed lands) There were cobbled streets, saloon bars, neon signs, cowboy hats, checkered shirts and lots of chaps. Most of the women had real big hair and lots of um, boob – dark lip liner and light lipstick, deep tans and everyone, I mean everyone was wearing cowboy boots.
We went to have dinner first, and although Jerry offered me the 18oz ‘big as yo face’ steak I opted for the 6oz sirloin – beautiful. My first Texas steak. We headed for the Rodeo and were entertained with calf roping, saddle bronc riding, bareback riding, bull riding and barrel racing. The bull riding was particularly entertaining – not so much for the action but for the decorative chaps these manly men were wearing. The winner, the only man who stayed on the bull for the full 8 seconds was wearing a stunning black pair of chaps decorated with bright pink metallic fringe…there were also zebra print chaps, one’s with flames on them, and every colour under the sun. Barrel racing was the one event for the ladies, and they had to ride around 3 barrels and the lady with the fastest time won. These gals didn’t have colourful chaps, but instead had cowboy bling bling in the form of glittery belts and shirts.
We went to a bar afterwards for a few drinks…everyone drinks light beer here, especially Miller light, but it is light in calories, not alcohol. I got to make my first tip – It was very exciting, and had an interesting time at the toilets trying to work out if I was a ‘filly’ or a ‘stud’. I fulfilled my mishap for the day – by slipping over at the bar onto my arse much to the amusement of all the cowboys, anyway there was a disco ball on the dance floor which consisted of a giant, mirrored ‘spur’ rotating with the traditional ball. Texas really is how you see it on the telly! Tired from all the Rodeo excitement we headed back to Cleburne and got some z’s – tomorrow Aimee and I are road tripping down to West Texas and Fort Davis where little Aimee was born and bred, we will be staying with her Mom and Dad for the next three days.
