I had my first classes today. They're not really classes, more like getting to know you times. I had 16 in my class today, but Vanessa says that lots of kids don't come to school for the first month or so. My classroom is large, blue and mostly bare when I arrived, but having spent the last week or so planning and decorating it now looks quite nice! This photo is from the weekend, the blank boards are now full of pretty pictures and an extra fun game called "Vertibrates or invertebrates!" Fun, fun, fun! I taught the kids Zip Zap Boing today at the end of the day and they loved it!!! They got really into it and when the bell rang they begged me to let them play it again tomorrow! HAHA!! Now I have a threatening tool! I got them to make up their class rules as well and we got thing like "no eating in class," "no fighting in class" and "no sleeping in class" which I think is a good set of rules! We added a few more and tomorrow are going to make posters for the room with them on! The kids are really good. They shut up when you tell them to and actually try really hard at their work. I had them make name posters this morning so that I could learn their names and I asked them to put all their favourite things around their name. One boy's poster consisted of himself in a thunder and lightning storm, on top of a mountain and surrounded by lions, tigers and sharks!!! Another girl said her favourite thing ever was snow. I asked her if she's ever seen snow. She hadn't. They really are lovely kids and the majority are really quite bright. I think this year is going to be good.
Live update - Alix just nearly blew up the oven and herself. We were attempting to make celebratory/commiserations banana cake (yes, yet more bananas), but I think we'll leave it for now. Alix now has no arm hair and has a singed fringe (it rhymes!)
We might be moving from the volunteers house as well. Graciela, the woman who set up the school, and Vanessa's Mum, wants us to move in with her and her husband. She's so lovely we might just do it! It means moving again, but Graciela is lovely, makes great food and speaks no English, so we'd have to learn Spanish really fast. That would be great.
We are planning on staying up until 1am our time (8am UK time) to see if our UCAS updates. I am so scared. I wasn't so scared until Vanessa lent us her internet USB thingy which means we can get the internet in our house. Now that I know that I only have two and a half hours until I find out if I got into university I am sooooo so scared!!! I know I haven't got my three A's that Edinburgh wanted, but I'm really really hoping that they might just let me in anyway? They won't, but it's worth hoping for. It's best not to think about it until I have to.
My Spanish is improving. I can say key phrases such as "necessita la llave para la bodega" - I need the key to the cupboard and "tienes picamente?" - do you have any glue? As well as lots of short point-at-it-and-say words like "quiero" - I want and "cuanto cuesta" - how much. Last year one of the volunteers came out with next to no Spanish and left almost fluent. Fingers crossed! Apparently when you start dreaming in Spanish, that's when you know you have it!
That's it for now, good luck to everyone getting their results tomorrow!! I'm thinking of everyone back home! Especially those with conditional uni places for this year! Good luck!
