Woop Woop South Africa :D
Well it didnt start too well, we missed our connecting flight to South Africa from Sydney as the flight from NZ was delayed- not our fault honest!! On the up side the airline paid for our accomodation that night, a 5* jobby (!!!) we each had our own room with a kingsize bed, dressing gowns, en suite, free shampoo, fluffy towels and complimentary tea and coffee, LUXURY, especially when were used to 10 bed dorms.
When we did finaly arive in johannesburg it was a bit of a shock driving to our hostel through all the slums..but our hostel was ok, it had 2 fences round it and bars on the doors and windows. We didnt leave our hostel until the safari people came to pick us up at 5 oclock the next morning.
The drive itself to the Kruger was eventful, we drove the wrong way up TWO one way streets, and no one batted an eyelid apart from us who were clinging on to our seats thinking WTF! That day we visited a cheetah rehab centre, lots of cheetahs, surprisingly, there was 3 really fluffy cubs but they were all in cages so you couldnt get very close :(. We arrived at Panzi bushcamp that evening, the rooms were nice but cold, they were made from bamboo type poles with a thatched roof, when it gets to -1 outside at night you can imagine its not much warmer inside the hut that it is outside! Anj decided to shower that night, it was FREEZING (and the shower was outside), so we went to dinner that night complaining about the freezing showers.. We were then served Worthog stew, i quite liked it but anj didnt, it was just beefy really.
The next morning we had to be ready to go for our game drive at 5am, it was freezing and in the back of open sided 4x4 the hour drive to the Kruger National park was not a nice one! That day we saw the big 5 (lions, elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard!!) and loads of other animals, crocs, hippos, zebra, giraffes, jackle, umpala, worthogs, hyena, waterbuck, monkey and an ostrich!! Amazing. Wed had such an exciting day we needed a nap before dinner, which we would have slept through if the hosts hadnt come and banged our door shouting "Dinner is served", oops.
The next day was much of the same, didnt see the big 5 (no leopard) but saw a baboon and a honey badger which are very rare apparently.
On our last day the kruger we had a morning game drive, in which we saw the big 5 again, wahey! There was also a big daddy lion walking across the road in front of us, an elephant pushing over a tree and a rhino pooing all right next to us! We then had to start our 7 hour drive back to jo'burg which really wasnt much fun.
One night in jo'burg in an 18 bed dorm (where we didnt leave our hostel again) and then we flew to cape town. we went down to the waterfront that night, anj found a guess shop so was exstatic and found an ATM to draw out some more money..
On the saturday morning we went up table mountain in a cable car, as we were walking around the top (in our lions shirts, of course) the "abseil africa" guy offered us a half price abseil as a consolation prize for the rugger we were about to lose (what did he know pfft). That afternoon we found a bar with big screens to watch the match. We were the only 2 red in a sea of green shirts and were feeling very intimidated, any celebrations for us in the match were over very quickly! We were bought a "springbok" shot by a SA fan, as he toasted to the springboks we just sort of glared and downed the shot. We were sooo relieved when we won! Lots of pats on the back and handshakes, more shots. The abseil africa man also came up to me in the queue for the loo, i told him to stick his consolation abseil, hahar.
The next morning we had to be ready by 5.30am to go to our shark cage dive! We started with a huge breaky (well huge for us as we cant afford to eat breakfast at the mo!) then we went out to shark alley, AMAZING! There was 12 different great whites throughout the day. One stuck its nose in the cage right in front of anj, she shat herself. (not litterally shed like to add) but she had to let go of the bar we held on to otherwise it would have been inside the sharks mouth! The day was smelly but amazing. That evening we went our to a near by restaurant, we had our first taste of the bad side associated with south africa when anjs bag was grabbed, but i think the man was aiming for her, was scary but she put him in his place with a few swear words.
On our last day in Cape town we went to robbed island to see where nelson mandela slept for 25 years, then did some shopping, anj bought a guess bag!
Were now facing 24 hours of travelling back to the UK, im really excited to be going home, anj not so much. Weve had the best time in the last 10 weeks!
This will be our last post but we shall be back in a day to tell you all about it in person!
See you soonnnn!!
Lots of love, us two xxs
