We left Te Anau yesterday (Wednesday) morning at 11.30am once we filled up with more petrol, went to the bank and got supplies from the supermarket. We drove so far, Col drove until just before Queenstown and then I took over the driving, we managed to get to Omarah, about 320km. We stayed at a free campsite, we could of pushed on until mount cook which was only an hour away but it was getting late and we were both bored of driving, we also wanted to give Keith (our campervan) a break. That night we actually saw the moon rise from behind the mountains, it was surreal, just like the sunrising in a morning. The moon was huge that night, it was also a full moon too.
In the morning after breakfast we hit the road again. We stopped for a bit in a town called Twizel which was cute. Filled up with more petrol, again, and off on the home straight to Mount Cook. Wow on the drive in all you can see is Mount Cook and the surrounding mountains all covered in snow, awesome. We went into the village centre to the tourist information to get the leaflet on the walks in the area. Then headed to the DOC campsite, where the road ends just before the mountains. A lovely camp area, only $10 each a night, with proper flush toilets, I miss those. We did a walk into the Valley which took about 3 hours that afternoon. Gorgeous weather and amazing sites. The day we headed to another part of the park to look at some other sites and the various glaciers that you could view. After 2 nights camping in the DOC site we made our way towards Lake Tekapo. Unfortunatley the camping ground at Lake Tekapo was full, so we just spent the afternoon there instead. We went up to the observatory on top of Mount John, Wow some great views from there. Later we made our way to the next town of Fairlie to try our luck there. We forgot it was a bank holiday in New Zealand, and all kiwis love to camp :) They had a couple of spaces left so we stuck there for the night.
In the morning we would head to Christchurch.
