Today, after returning from Maine, we went into Boston for the day. With so much history and so many things to look at, it's certainly ranks up there for me.While driving in, I thought of a few addendums to yesterday's blog that I had forgotten.I forgot to mention an aromatic cocktail that I think if I could bottle up or make into a candle, I might be rich. The combination of campfire smoke and Deep Woods Off with a slight hint of all the trees and ferns and other vegetation surrounding you, is there anything better?
We did the Boston Duck Tour.If you are not familiar with a duck, it's a land and water vehicle.I'm not sure what Angela was absorbing but her eyes were wide and wandering the entire time so I know she was taking in what she could. In the future when she is studying American history, we will have a nice set of memories for her to go through, such as seeing the steeple of the Old North Church (lanterns: 1 if by land, 2 if by sea). Her primary concern, though, was seeing how this vehicle we were traveling in could possibly float.
We finally made it into the Charles River and she was impressed. What she really enjoyed, though, was when the duck captain started asking for other little captains to drive the duck.Angela got her shot and drove the tour group for a section of the Charles River. The picture of her doing that turned out good.I told her I had never driven a duck before and I asked her what it was like. She said, "It was awesome!" Angela: world traveler, duck driver.
Afterwards, we went back to Cambridge to where my grandmother lives and where Angela's grandmother grew up.It's interesting for me to note that a lot of my memories are attached to sound. The sounds of the trees and whatnot in Rindge take me back.In Cambridge, it was the sounds of creaking boards, and it's not just random boards.I know exactly where to step to make sounds that I've heard and remember since I was a boy.I have trouble remember things from a long time ago but if you add the sound track to the environment of the time, I can go right back with clarity.
So my mom gave Angela a tour of where she grew up.Angela was impressed that she got see grandma's room when she was a little girl. And of course, the house is loaded with pictures.Angela saw grandma and Uncle Larry as kids and younger versions of everyone else she's been seeing. The one extra comment she made was about my sister, "Aunt "Michelle still looks the same."That's not entirely a bad thing, right?Don't we all want to be ageless?Hmmm…
At dinner that night, another successful first for Angela, clam chowder.I didn't just let her taste the broth, she had a nice piece of clam to go with it.She liked it enough to want to order some. So we will add that to the list of new things.
An update on my phone for those interested, it did power on and I still have my list of phone numbers. However, the earpiece did not survive and the display worked twice and then gave up.I looked up phone stores for my provider and they are all the opposite of the direction I'm going.Oh well, something to take care of as soon as I get home. One week to go.
