Before we arrived here in Maryland, we spent a day in Jamestown and Williamsburg, Virginia. It was fascinating seeing history alive and presented as they do.It kept Angela's attention for the most part which is pretty good.I was happy after touring one of the ship, The Susan Constant, that I made it out without a concussion. As Angela pointed out, I was too tall for this ship and I should be careful.I love it when she looks out for me.
We saw a demonstration of loading and firing a swivel cannon. At Williamsburg, we also saw a reenactment of a reviewing of the troops, complete with muskets and cannons being fired. We were both pretty fascinated by the tradesmen, particular the blacksmith. The silversmith was interesting but Angela was fascinated by watching the blacksmith shape and form a ladle. I must admit, I was a little fascinated myself.
When looking through the museum, I found it interesting that Angela was wanting to spend more time in an area that was discussing African art and slavery.Question of the day, "Why did they want to be slaves?" Yes, yes, we discussed it a little more in detail.
Today, we spent the day in Washington, D.C.Wow, I had no idea how much there was to see.I'm not sure what I was expecting but it was quite a bit.I knew what Angela would want to see so we made sure to get to the National Gallery of Art and the National Museum of Natural History. While she really enjoyed the dinosaur section and loved the live butterfly exhibit, most of her "ooohs" came from the geological section of gems, minerals, etc.We saw the Hope Diamond and other huge samples of quartz, copper, and geodes. She told me, "I want to be a geologist!"
The rest of the day for us was just seeing and finding the recognizable marks, i.e. The White House, the Capitol building, the Washington Monument, etc.It was good to see her recognize these things she has learned about in school.Another goal accomplished.
An awkward moment from today, we went to the Arlington National Cemetery. What a fascinating place with SO much history buried there. There are signs up requesting silence and respect; it's a very solemn place. We went to the Kennedy family plots.I turn around for a visual check on Angela and she is walking along the wall of the water monument in front of Robert Kennedy's grave. We've been doing great with phonics but apparently, "DO NOT WALK ON THE WALL" escaped her skills.
One other funny Angela line was from dinner tonight. We went to a restaurant and didn't receive a kid's menu.So I'm trying to find something that she will eat, the pot roast. She says, "I don't want that.I want prime rib."Well, I'm trying to keep our $ footprint down and that doesn't help much.So I sold her on the pot roast because it came with mashed potatoes, which is key for her.She asked me what else came with it and I told her I wasn't sure but we can ask the waiter. When the waiter approached the table for a drink order, she interrupted with, "So what's with the pot roast?"I apologized and told the waiter she left out the word "comes" before "with".He suggested the kid's menu which we took.Turns out they had a kid's prime rib.Clearly, she knew what was going on.New things she tried tonight that she liked: ginger ale and pesto. I'm so proud that she's just trying so much new stuff.
