Black Mountain GC - Hua Hin.
The only word to describe this course is "gorgeous" and "picturesque". Set in the lap of a hilly part of Hua Hin, aproximately 16 kms inland from the city of Hua Hin. The course is well designed, beautifully set with water on each hole. On most holes you have a little space off the tee for a slighty wayward shot that will allow you a clear second shot but the rough is a bit sticky, so driving it in the fairway is a good idea if you want to score well.
There are other holes that you will need to hit it in the fairway like the 17th (par5) or the 11th (par3) or you will definitely find water. The greens are very true and mostly readable. You want to avoid bunkers as they have very soft sand and it is easy to hit poor shots from them . Black Mountain is very picturesque with some of the mountain holes having boulders left behind as both features and obstacles to play around. I highly recommend this course with it's 5 tee blocks from which you can pick your level of difficulty from championship pro course, low handicap to high handicap etc. Everything is in great condition with the option of drive buggy or walk.
Again if you are on your own I suggest you have someone interperate that you want to play in a group and "not play on your own". English in the pro shop is not a high standard. Although I got my hotel to confirm this for me I found myself on my own... again, when I requested to be joined with other golfers, however the starter found a group of three already out on the course and drove me out to the 4th tee to join them. The guys were fantastic and fun to play with. I really enjoyed their spirit and this helped me have a memorable day at Black Mountain GC. I was able to walk with one of the other players who had good English ( from France) who also played low handicap golf. We had great conversations. I managed to play reasonably well despite cutting a few drives to the right toward the end of the round. A score of 80 with two balls in the water (resulting in two double bogeys) I am not unhappy with this score against a par of 72 on the low handicap length blue tee layout at 6950 yard (6270 mtr). Black Mountain has enough to test the highest level player. A course you are guaranteed to enjoy even if you play poorly. The views are stunning from the higher holes. There is nothing tricked up here ...it's "all" golf course. Good luck playing here.
The round cost $1800 Baht Inc caddie fee. An absolute bargan. I tipped my caddy an extra 300 baht ($12.00 AUD) well worth the advise on a few putts saving a few strokes. Taxi from the hotel was expensive for Thailand but about par for Hua Hin but you will not find a metered fare here in Hua Hin. Expect to pay 500 + baht each way (its the going rip off rate!). I found out later that most resort courses here will pick you up and drop you back if you're staying in one of the main hotels. If you want to play an arranged game contact any of the many golf course organizers that will do all the leg work. One is "Ms Apple" aka as Noppamad Keawkam contact number (0868052150). According to my French playing partner she will arrange golf for you and get you there and back including the transfer fee. I wasn't so lucky on this trip paying 1,000 baht for taxi to and from the golf course. Of course no one at the hotel or on the phone at the course will tell you what you need to know in order to save money.
This course was booked out solid the day I played so be sure to book in advance. It's worth playing and for the price I'd play there as many times as I could.
Great value for money. Very friendly starter and caddy's. Very helpful and accommodating. This course is an absolute must play here in Hua Hin Thailand.
