Thai Country Club. (Rating 3/5)
What a fiasco! After specifically asking to play in a group I found myself standing on the tee on my own with my caddie telling me (i think - not much of what she was saying to me was recognisable english) we were a one. I'm pretty annoyed right at this moment as I have asked this question 5 times and got a yes reply every time "yes with other golfers". I then speak to the starter and a few others after then a manager intervenes I am welcomed into Japanese touring group and play as a group. Names were a little difficult to remember but as all people are they were terrific... And let me tee off first. One thing I understand is english or no english "golf is a universal language" and getting to play and enjoy other peoples games is one thing I appreciate while trying to enjoy my own (which is sometimes not that easy).
I am the only walker between the four of us. I was playing well until a fairway bunker snared my ball and I hit the next one in the water. Yep a bogey opens my round up to being 1 over the card after 5 holes and slowly my round drifts with double bogey two holes later. Two birdies only help to eliminate one of my two double bogeys both resulting from weak finishing putts following tee shot mistakes. Alas with a closing bogey an 80 is my first score here in Thailand.
Thai country club whacked me a whopping 3900 THB or $130.00 for the privilege and only offered the blue or middle tees. If you are going to do this as a one you need to at least get the privalege of tee choice!
I recommend you get a Thai person to book you into a group like a tour operator who should have a good understanding on the language as well as your needs. Good luck. I didn't have any joy trying to use a local sports tour operator who just booked exactly what I could have with no benefits to me at all.
Anyway back to the golf... The course is a good layout and the greens are true, some move deceptively the opposite to how they look. A good caddy should fix this however. When you finish it's only right to pay the caddy a tip and in my case she had to earn her wage 360 THB or $12.00 AUD an extra $6.00 was fair (200 THB) as I did not have any water during the round and I missed two putts which were poorly read... Damned I hate that! It was an enjoyable round but bloody expensive for what my understanding is of golf costs. I'm not so sure paying $850THB is worth missing the exercise and taking the trip around the flat layout by cart. It certainly is nice feeling having the fairway underfoot.
The club welcomes you in following your round with a cold towel and a bottle of water. After this not much warmth as no one seems to speak english! I really appreciated my playing partners. They made my day here at Thai Golf Club.
I had the club call a taxi for my trip home and waited 20 minutes for the ride. Could be an advantage to arrange a driver to wait (Bangkok cen tral return should be about 8-900 THB.
