Once again we got on the bus at an unruly hour and headed to Phnom Penh. Arriving at the city was a real shock to the system after the sleepy town of Kampong Cham. After lunch in a westernised mall, where we both succomberd to Cambodia's answer to Pizza Hut (We really needed something bland and chessey after all the Asian food!) we then got back on the bus and headed deep into the Cambodian countryside. Stopping to pick up some crates of beer and some 'roadies' for thr final part of the drive deep into the wilderness.
The village we were styaing in has operated the homestays as an alternative means of income for the last few years. We stayed in a very basic, traditional wooden house on stilts. The family kindly give up their slepping room for us and slept under the house in hammocks. In our room there were eight of us, who slept on sheets on the floor under mosquito nets!
After a tour of the village, where we learned that the villagers had to move out for 10 years whilst the Khmer Rouge hid out in the nearby jungle, a meal was prepared for us at the 'Women's Restaurant' where the local women cooked traditional Cambodian dishes.
We then headed back to our home for the night, where Long, our guide had brought us tarantulas and crickets to try! (Needless to say, we didn't try either!) We did however try the local 'rice wine!' We then finished off the night by playing Ring of Fire and drinking our alcohol supply dry!
