Hi Andrew here. Sorry about the lack of updates. We will do a few over the coming days as a catch up:
We arrived in Lima in the early evening after flying from Buenos Aires and got a taxi to our hotel. This was a pre arranged ride due to the stories of pillage we had heard when illegal taxi drivers whisk you off to be robbed. Not cool. Initial impressions of the place at night was a hectic spawling urban scene. Not surprised.
On this basis it was a relief to see the hotel we were staying in was very nice! Always good in a strange place after a flight. The hotel had all the requirements in fact including wifi in our room meaning some calls could be made home. We had a rather interesting conversation with Angus and Morag (aka the witch and wizard of York) at 3am Yorkshire local time. Everyone please take note, don't drink (a lot, Angus) and Skype. Jokes aside was good to chat.
The following day we did a bit of sifting around Lima. This was done in unusually high spirits initially as I failed to realise the small jug of coffee provided was concentrated and enough for 5 people or so. Thinking the locals must like their coffee like crude oil I drank the lot. Not too clever.
The Hotel was located in the suburb of Miraflores which would be one of the nicest in the city and a hub for tourists. Lima gets a pretty bad wrap from most sources but as I had lunch in a slick shopping mall on the cliffs over looking the coast (with some pretty nice waves to boot) I couldn´t help but think this part of the city at least was cool.
In evening as we were joining a tour group we hooked up with our companions to be and had some dinner. Our guide is a cool guy who immediately hit it off with Laura when they bonded over a mutual interest in celebrity gossip.
Anyway a brief update but there is more to follow. Next stop Cuzco.
