Snoooowwww!!! My last week has been full of it, and i guess there will only be more heading my way! :) Luckily there is a magic concoction here in Europe called 'Gluhwein', which warms you right up and also makes for a fun time :P
So, currently now in Hamburg, but however before here I was in Luxembourg for just under a week. Spent a few days in Luxembourg City (dont know why they didnt name the main city something different to the country name... was so confused the first time i was planning my trip there). Arrived and i dont think iv ever been so confused after getting off a train... I had no idea which direction to leave the train station! I had a map, but the streets on both sides of the train station looked the same on the map, so was going back and forth trying to figure out which side to exit on, and after 20 minutes some randoms were kind enough to tell me. But anywhos, walked to my next youth hostel, and yet again it was down a massive hill! Maybe thats why these places are so cheap, because the locations are placed in redonkulous hilly areas? My few days in Luxembourg city were very slow and relaxed. I found out that the city wasnt so big, so it didnt take me long to walk around and through the entire city. It is however a nice city just to walk around in; the christmas stalls are all getting set up, it seems very chillaxed so it doesnt make you feel rushed. The days in Luxembourg wernt so good though, didnt see the sun once :( but i think thats normal for Luxembourg? Met some nice people in my hostel, one Irish guy haha, that wasnt really a long conversation, thats a funny story for when im back home though. Also talked a lot with a guy from greece, living in Sweden and in Luxembourg as a translator. The breakfasts were so good here!! Actually managed to save a lot on food (lucky because there was only 'one' small supermarket in the city and it was sooooooo expensive!!), because i just made sandwiches from all the food they served at breakfast, so was stoked from that!
To finish of Luxembourg, spent one day in Vianden, a small town at the north-east of Luxembourg were a famous castle is. Only went there for the castle, it was worth it. It only costs 1.5 euro to travel anywhere around Luxembourg for 2 hours... So you can get from the south to the north in like 1 hour for 1.5 euro, its crazy!! Prices in like germany would be like 30 euro for the same trip. So arrived in Vianden, lo and behold I had to yet again climb a massive hill! However, the location of the hostel wasnt marked on the map correctly, so I actually walked a steep hill for about 400 meters so no reason... Just as I walked back down the hill, gave up for 1 second, just about to sit down and eat some lunch, and some randoms pointed to a building 'literally' 20 meters away which was my hostel haha. So that was cool. Arrived, at reception there were free lollies, u know those lollies that are miniture hamburgers or hotdogs?? Yea.. those.. there was a jar of them and she didnt like them so gave them all to me, yaayyy haha. Quickly dropped my bags and went to see the castle and town before it went dark. Actually just walked past the paying area at the entrance to the castle, but felt bad and went to pay- i always get away with student prices any way so didnt really care. Always use the "Ahh yea about that, i left my student card back in Australia" then look really sad, works a charm. The castle was pretty cool, half mountain half stone, was cool to walk through. I found out I was the only guest staying in the hostel that night!! That was kind of lame, but i knew Vianden wasnt a party place haha, so wasnt devoed. So just chilled with the woman manager all night; chatted and helped with christmas decorations.
So, the start of my 10 hour journey to Hamburg began early the next morning. Half of my trains and buses were behind schedule, so that wasnt making my day that easy, but managed to end up on the main train I needed so thats all that mattered. Stop over in Cologne, and with my 10 minute train change, i saw the Cathedral 'just' outside of the station, so ran for it, took 2 photos and ran back to get on my last train. Met 2 girls from Bulgeria, they are doing some UN practice thing in Hamburg, so chatted with them for the 4 hour train ride and organised to go out with them on thurs/fri, however didnt end up seeing them haha, kept on going to bars at different times. First morning was snowfall!! Snowed all day which was awesome! Hamburg is a massive city, so much to see, and it was sooo cold, by the 2nd half of the days I was always freezing so I had to keep jumping into stores to warm myself up. Bumped into a few streets just lined up with Chrismas stalls! So cool, there was so much Gluhwein and so much christmassy food, was in heaven! Had to cave in and buy something, so worth it. Im guessing ill be seeing these christmas stalls everywhere I go from now on, woop! :)
My hostel had a massive group of 20 students from a uni in Munich who were all here doing the UN thingy too (same thing that the girls from Bulgeria were at)! Ended up getting to know half of them on saturday night, but they had a private party I couldnt get into. One of the girls from this group was from Russia, we chatted for a while; really nice girl, wanted to chat longer and get her to come out but unfortunately she was busy with work so couldnt come out :( So met a smaller group in the hostel who I went out with on Sat night. Cooked 2 litres of Gluhwein! Awesome drink, I managed to drink 1.5 of it but needed help with the last bit. Then after warming up, went out to the red light district of Hamburg! We went to a bar-club and then to Olivia Jones bar. She/he is some really famous transvestite in europe or Germany, not sure. But he/she was actually there! Managed to get a quick photo but was too blurry.. :( The music there was kinda.. funny but lame. Can only dance to it for like 1 or 2 hours, then it gets the same. So did ma thing, ripped up the d-floor then back to the hostel at some time of the morning.
Tomorrow morning I have my early morning travels to Sweden! I have no idea how cold its going to be... I think i should be ok, my feet might freeze a little.
