Filippa and I have now reached the sea, the adriatic sea actually, which is breathtaking. Croatia is this beautiful country, very touristy unfortunately, and reminds me of a mix between Italy and the south of France. As we get more south the hand movements of people talking gets more spread and common, men have their black shiny hair glued to their heads with black sunglasses, old people are sitting on benches in the park gossiping, and it is incredibly hot. It seems that we can't take enough clothes of, I think it must be around 35 degrees, at least I have the impression it is. In Zadar our hostel was located right next to the sea and as we were sitting in the bus we had the impression that the bus was going to drive directly in the sea (which could have been quite nice) as the road was just next to the ocean. But where did I come from? Yes, we headed directly to the beach from our hostel which was only a few steps away, actually if you would go a few meters just straight from the gates of our hostel, you would land directly in the azure blue water. So yes, we headed to the sea, and it was fantastic to swim and have a panoramic view of the islands just a little further away and the city with its spires and red roofs. Amazing, except for the cold I catched from swimming/diving in the water and being on the beach afterwards.
So what we did was that we visited the diocletian palace, which was built in 305 AD (yes, it's very old), and is actually the world's most complete remains of a Roman Palace situated in the very center of Split. Though what is left today of it is not much, only the underground, as some of the palace was destroyed during the middle ages and used to build houses, on the palace actually. So it was very nice and cool in the underground of the palace and actually thanks to the litter and garbadge that people threw into the cellar of the palace in the middle ages, the cellar of the palace was very extremely well preserved and is actually written on the unesco list of world heritage. Not bad eh? So garbage and litter can actually be useful in an interesting way.
Tomorrow is Filippas birthday and I am planning to make a very nice breakfast (she has no idea) and thereafter go for a swim, I think that is exactly what we will need. And what I need now is a nice cup of tea (did you know that there is a group on facebook called "a nice cup of tea solves everything"? ,of course created by british people, but isn't there some truth in it?)
