I have just finished my first week at work. It has been fantastic and even better than I expected. I was looking after 7 orangutans aged between 3 and 5. They were all lovely and as the week went on I really got to know them and grew to love each one individually. It's so amazing being able to work with them after loving orangutans for so long. I also took care of a baby gibbon whose mother was killed so it was taken to Rasa to be cared for. He is called Milo (pronunced Meelo) and will too eventually be released. There is a photo of him in my album!
The reserve I worked in is brilliant and I think you should all visit. It is 64acres of land and every penny they make goes straight to the orangutans. It is in a beautiful location, right on a beach with white sands and blue seas. And very close to the town centre of Kota Kinabalu. Visitors get to see the orangutans swinging from the trees just where they should be :) A great experience. Everyone must come and while you're here, visit Sepilok too!
The orangs are gorgeous and very independent. It's great to see them adapt to well to climbing, nest building, foraging for food. They were all rescued from various different places such as palm oil plantations and some were being kept illegally as pets. Now they have been given a second chance, and the staff at Rasa and 110% dedicated and passionate about their conservation. It's great to see so many people so passionate about the orangutans and spending a majority of their time working toward rehabilitating them.
Eventually the orangs will go back to Sepilok, one of them is going back in October so we will see him again! It's great because it means he is one step closer to being released.
I had a great time working with the orangs and cant wait to go back to Sepilok and start working with the very little babies. I will miss Rasa, the orangs, other animals and the staff loads. The staff as so welcoming and friendly and I really hope we stay in contact!
Having a great time out here, the time of my life! Feel so priviledged to have this opportunity. Dont want it to end. So might just stay here and chill with the orangs forever!
I have made an album on this site with a photos of some of the orangs I worked with. They're all gorgeous!
Hope everyone back home is well!
Will update you again soon!
