Well Ive been at Camp now for five weeks and the time is flying by. I spend my first two weeks shadowing the Spring OE Staff and then I had a week preping ready for summer to start. I then had a week to relax and help out a little in Res Camp as Summer started with the first campers arriving on the 1st July. Last week was all about OE as the groups started coming and I think apart from one or two days this summer we have an Outdoor Ed group on site, so its going to be a busy summer for me...
When I came to camp I was not looking forward to the food but I have been very pleasently suprised and the brownies and cookies may be the best I have ever had so I am certainly eating well. I am also on my way to making the perfect roast marshmellow and learning of things to cook over a camp fire which I have never even heard of.
Even with all the yummy food I am eating - we get breakfast a cooked lunch, tea and evening snack I still think I am going to be getting a lot fitter this summer with the amount of walking I am doing at camp. The camp seems to be hill after hill which I am slowly getting used to.
Though I am living in the Valley which is at the bottom of one of the hills in a log cabin which is just somewhere to rest out heads so for breakfast or a shower or anything we have to take the 5/10 min walk which is up hill all the way so I definately make sure I have everything I need for the day when I start my morning.
I am learning more then I though at camp be it how to set up a ropes course or just about the canadian and camp culture. Ive learnt how to do archery and build and fire and shelter. As well as simple things like new card games. That was one of the things I wanted to come from, I am learning from the campers, counsellors and staff here which is an amazing experience and I hope I am teaching them a little about the English way of life as I am the only english person here.
I am also having the oppertunity to go on a 3 day/4 night canoe trip though the lakes in Ontario Canada which are supposed to be absolutely beautiful which I am looking forward to though I know it is going to be very hard work due to having to portage as well as canoe to sites where we can camp for the night and having to carry all of our equiptment.
I do have moment where I am missing everyone back home and being able to do something simple like go to the shop or for a night out but I am overal loving the experience so far. Being able to walk to work with the sun shining through forest is something I wont ever forget and everyone has made me feel so welcome, I feel like ive been here forever.
Hopefully Summer will continue being a good experience and I can help some campers have a brilliant summer here.
