Friday 22 January
After I finally get up I eat Malcolm's lunch from yesterday and a smoothie. I get started on the final part on my research - local stats and help Hannah a little with the money. There is a smell of cat pee and I can't figure where it's coming from, so when Hannah goes to help feed the children I get into cleaning. The cleaning girl only came yesterday but I get into in again. I do some washing too before going for lunch. I just relax after lunch and then we head up to the Massi village to drop off food. At the moment it's a beautiful lush green plateau of a volcano. The ppl live very primitively. Round huts made of mud and no windows. There are so many children. In filthy rags and things. Flies stuck to their faces. The flies here are annoying. I see an older man with an ulcer on his leg; exposed to the air and flies. They have big holes on their ears. I couldn't feel more out of place. I feel ashamed. The food bags get handed out. The children stare and I feel like a mix of a circus act and father Christmas. I want to give them things. But also not. I don't want them to always think white ppl will give them things. We are allowed to take photos, but to me it feels sacrilegious. Basic hygiene would go a long way here I think. And something to keep the flies off. But water isn't an easy commodity. There is a government built well on a hill far away. I feel relieved to leave. We give some ladies a ride to the market with their heavy bags.
Once back I get started cooking for sabbath. Dinner is delicious and we go to bed early!
