Jogjakarta/Yogyakarta, depending on who you ask and where you look, was full of education, culture and early mornings. The first day there we did two city tours which took us to the dutch settlement museum, Vredeberg, where a TON of school kids crowded around taking pictures with Jay and I. We felt famous!! LOL It was cute, they were so excited. We went to the Sultan's Garden/Museum, the Water Castle, a market we chose not to get out of the car for and a bird/fish market we only stayed at very briefly. Amy Sture, I thought of you a lot there, it was brutal!!
The pool was a welcoming sight and dinner at Milas was amazing. It is a vegetarian restaurant in a back alley with german owners/chefs that is involved in the community in a big way. The food was the best we've had (and pretty much the cheapest) so we gorged ourselves and were back the next night for more! We ended the day at a traditional puppet show just out of the main part of town. It was a cultural experience for sure; unfortunately not in English so I'm not really sure who died :)
The second full day was our earliest morning yet with our wake up call ringing at 3am. We went on our hoursih long car ride to the Temple of Borobudur where we joined others up the stairs in the dark to watch the sunrise. Um. Yeah. As luck would have it there was too much cloud to see the sun. It was however beautiful; a magnificent sight and view.
After the temple we made our way to Merapi; Indonesia's most active volcano which erupts, on average, every four years with the biggest eruptions being every 10 years. The last large eruption was in 2010 where ~350 people were lost. The guide that took us on his scooter up the hill as far as we could go was 24 year old Friendy. In the eruption he lost his twin sister, brother, another sister, his home and village. It was amazing to hear his story, see the river the lava made its way down and what it destroyed in it's path. Unfortunately again the clouds were relentless so we could not see the peak, but we saw pictures at the Merapi Museum we visited on our way back to Jogja.
The next morning was a 5am wake up to make our way to Semerang where we had a flight booked to the island of Borneo :)
