Third world countries are definitely not what we are used to.
No job? No shoes? No shirt? No problem! Here, weld this. What? You don't know how to weld? No problem! Grab this jack hammer...
I thought the people in the street with whistles were workers. Nope! They are just citizens jumping in to stop traffic so you can make your turn at the intersection where there are no signs or lights for any tips you decide to give them. Risk takers will also defy traffic to sell motorist stuck in gridlock drinks, food, good luck charms and toys for the kids; not for the faint at heart!
Two lanes of traffic blocking your way? No problem! Honk your horn and use the shoulder for what it's meant for; a third lane!
Lol. Yes, things are different here. At first I was nervous in the taksi with what one driver referred to as 'mosquitoes' (scooters) coming at you from all angles. Now I find it kind of amusing and always root for the taksis.
Something new to me ask I write this is an amputee begger following the taksi, tapping on the glass, grasping for the door as we crawl along too slowly in traffic and begging for money. Coincidently yesterday I was watching National Geographic and they were doing a special on the street beggars in India who dress up in fake bandages and casts each day. This, though, is all too real. The hardships are not always easy for this bleeding heart to witness.
The animals and their state something I will mention but not something I will describe to you as it always weighs heavy on the heart, but know they have not gone unnoticed.
All in all Indonesia has been a pleasant experience so far and it about to get better; Jay is flying in tonight. This means a world of things including: I can stop missing him, I can leave the hotel after dark, we can visit more remote areas and villages and I have someone amazing to share this all with. I am looking very forward to experiencing more of what Indonesia has to offer, making our way back to Bali and seeing Ubud.
The hotel we will be staying at for the next two nights, The Media Hotel & Towers, is amazing. It was a good deal on one of my new favorite apps; booking.com. Check out the pool!! Not bad at $125 for two people and two nights. The staff have also been amazing; the waitress has come back 3 times after taking my order; excuse me miss, sorry, can you have sour, like limes/sugar/salt? So cute and incredibly helpful.
Love you all :)
