Yesterday:
Ahhh~ no entry for yesterday. But that's okay; yesterday was a bit of a flop. I didn't get up until late and then I thought I'd go see the Imperial Palace. Except that Tokyo Station feeds straight into the Yaesu Shopping Mall (Underground shopping centre) and by the time I'd finally convinced myself to leave it I was all turned around.
I found an exit to the street level and then proceded to spend a couple of hours completely lost in Tokyo. I still don't know where I went. Though along the way I found the Tokyo subway line and just thought "Stuff it, I'll go into one more store and when I come back out I'll get on the subway to a station where I'll be able to find my way home.
So I went into the one last store. OoAhh with the upmarket-ness. Gucci and Luis Vutton and all sorts of ridiculously overprices bits and pieces. There was even an Hermes store! But underneath it all, on the basement level, there was a gourmet market where they sold real meat. Meat that I recognised. And okay, most of the meat was so marbled that it looked more like stretched out tripe with bits of meat smooshed into the holes but there was some nice stuff there. I got me some nice New Zealand lamb - chops and fillets.
And then when I finally found my way back to the entrance that I'd come in from, I found a map that told me where to go to get to the real Tokyo station. So I finally found my way back to where I'd come from and I still had enough daylight left that I could have gone for a quick look at the Imperial Palace, except that I was carrying meat and I figured I should get it to a refrigerator. It was a horribly cold day but it was still plenty warm in the sun.
And hence my day ended with nothing to show for it execpt a couple of nights worth of dinner and a souvenier for Dad.
Today:
This morning I went to Tokyo Tower. 333m high. It beats the Eiffel Tower by 13m - Not a lucky number but no one seems to mind. It was very cool. Exposed elevator taking you up to the 150m high observation deck. I got a bit of vertigo but there was no one to complain to, so I had to get over it and get on with things.
I walked around. Took photos. I kind of hate taking photos of myself - it's a constant reminder that my head it huge. There was another observation deck another 100m up but it was another 600yen to get there so I didn't bother ( it's 820yen just to get the one I went to - about $9 australian).
Anyway after that I took some video of the elevator going back down and then had some lunch in the eatery on the second floor. There's an aquarium in the basement too but I didn't go in (though the souvenier shop did have axelotel key rings - I was so tempted but they were all pink)
And then, after a ride on the subway and the train, I got to Ueno. I meant to check out the whole of Ueno Park but I ended up spending the entire afternoon in Ueno Zoo. There are a lot of photos of the zoo but for some reason they won't upload for me. I've tried about five times already. I'll try again tomorrow.
There were leemurs! Leemurs!! And lions and tigers and bears, Oh my!
And polar bears and penguins and salamanders and emus and owls and all sorts of things! I like the zoo. I really like the zoo.
And it turns out that that pagoda that I thought I couldn't find in Kyoto ... Yeah, turns out that I couldn't find it because it's in Ueno. There will be photos of that too when I get them to upload to the site.
And so ends today's saga. I'm rather tired, I have windburn on my lips and my eyeballs and I'm fairly certain that I'm going to have to mail some of my belongings home because Jetstar isn't going to appreciate how much my stuff weighs these days, but all in all I'm a very happy chappy today. If only everyday included so many cute animals~
