As you all know we are now home safe and sound!! However, we still have to tell everyone about Fiji and New York!
On Friday May 9th we flew from Auckland to Nadi. We chose a great day to leave as the weather was the worst we'd seen it the whole time we had been in New Zealand!
We had 2 nights in Nadi (the mainland) to organise ourselves as by then we hadn't booked anything. So on our first day we sunbathed and booked our island hopping! We were to have 3 nights in Waya Lai Lai, 2 at Beachcombers, 2 at Southsea and 3 at Robinson Crusoe Island.
Waya Lai Lai was our first stop where we stayed at a locally owned resort. On our first day we did reef snorkelling, where we were taken on a boat and dumped in the middle of the sea! We managed to see 6 White Tip Reef Sharks. The guides were diving down and feeding them and pulling their tails!! The reef was really pretty but I think we were both getting fed up with the amount of people on the trip as a lot of them had no sense of control in the water! The next day we went on a trip to visit the 2 villages on the island. In the first village we were taken to see where they lived and we could buy locally made jewellery and gifts. In the second village we were taken to visit the school where the children put on a show and sang us some songs. I soon lost Amy as she was dragged into one of the classrooms by some children for a chat! A 10 yr old boy then took me to show him where the UK was on a map. They couldn't believe how far away we lived! It was so nice that all the children were so happy and really seemed to enjoy talking to everyone even though they probably get tourists visiting them everyday!
Up until then the weather had been okish, but that night it absolutely poured down. It was horrible!! Everywhere was so muddy and the toilets were about 30ms away from the dorm! To top things off, a damp dog had come into the dorm and refused to leave without getting aggressive! I think this was our worst time in Fiji.
The next day it was onto Beachcomber island!! We asumed we would be in the 80 bed dorm we had heard so much about, but we had been allocated a 10 bed dorm! This was considered a party island, so that night was the first time we had worn makeup in a while! The food on Beachcombers was amazing and we even got dessert (we were very excited about this)! We met quite a lot of people on this island and had a couple of good nights at the bar. It definitely wasn't the party island we had expected it to be, but we still had a great time. I think it helped that the weather was amazing while we were there so we could spend our days sunbathing!!
We then had a couple of nights on SouthSea Island. This was a tiny island where it took us about 5 minutes to walk around the entire island! You could always see from one end of the island to the other. There was only one 35 bed dorm but there were a lot of day trippers on the island in the day. The weather carried on holding up for us, and we even had the luxury of sunloungers on the beach. Amy treated us to a white wine spritzer as the sun went down on the first day. It doesn't get much better than that!! It was so nice to be able to do nothing and unwind after New Zealand. We wanted to go home refreshed! We had one quiet night on South Sea and a bit of a later one the next night where there was crab racing and drunkopoly!
We had one more night on the mainland before going to, what turned out to be our favourite island, Robinson Crusoe!! We were here for 3 nights, and although the weather broke down and our only nice day was our last day, we had a great time!! The staff there were great and we spent our time in the rain making coconut bracelets and coconut jewellery boxes (the first of their kind I must add!!). The staff put on a show on 2 of our evenings where they did firedancing and traditional dance. We had a kava welcoming ceremony where we all had to stand up and say whether we were single or not and then down a bowl of kava, which even the locals hated to drink! Amy even managed to get herself a Fijian boyfriend from here-Killy!! We had spent a bit of time chatting to them and they had helped us with our coconut boxes, but he assumed that he and Amy were boyfriend and grilfriend. Amy didn't have the heart to tell him otherwise and took his email address. He even said he was going to come and wave her off at the airport, but unfortunately he wasn't there when we turned up. I don't think that had anything to do with the fact that Amy had told him we were flying 3 hours later than we actually were! Amy you heartbreaker!! It was a great end to a really good couple of weeks in Fiji!
