kia ora guys!
Have been in Rio for a couple of days now and things are picking up! Had a bit of a rocky start with a bit of shock from seeing all the poverty as we were driving in, then being kicked out of our taxi cause the cab driver couldn't find our hostel. Needless to say, this wasn't the best first impression! Staying in a hostel with music blaring til 2am then starting again at 7am + having a fatty arbuckle biatch of a room mate didn't help!!
Haven't done a hell of a lot as it's been raining non-stop. Have been to the mall a couple of times and went out to explore a bit yesterday. Went to go check out a church that Cherie wanted to see in Gloria - once off the metro though we realised that the area was a bit dodge (think Otara) and after trying to sneak past a crazy man (who saw us ans start yelling at us in Portugeuse) to get to the church we decided to flag and pretty much ran back to the metro hahahahahhaha.
Went to a concert last night at the Fundação Progresso which is in Lapa. Got a bit grooved up (did makeup, hair etc) only to go outside to flag down a taxi and in the process get soaked to the bone from the rain lol! The concert was really quite good, not my typical sort of music but a real good show. The opening singers had a samba band and dancers that came and performed in the middle of the crowd and everyone down on the dance floor kinda got involved. Way different vibe to an Auckland concert - people were holding hands and dancing in a giant circle lol. Yeah I know it sounds quite hippy-ish but it wasn't lol. Maybe one of those things where you had to be there?? Anyway, the main singer was Manu Chao. Real amazing performer live on stage. Yay, so our decidedly average start was on it's way up (even though we were still dripping wet by the end of the show lol!!)
Today it's sunny again (woop woop!) and we are heading out to do a city tour and see the giant jesus statue! Eeeeee!
