Trying to secure the proper documentation to enter the UK has been quite the experience this go round...
In order to make this process as simple as possible for others applying from within the US, here is a 3 step process in which to get to the UK. This process should begin about 6 months before you travel.
1) Ask Yourself These Questions:
Do I have a Passport?
Yes- Excellent! Now to apply for the UK Border Agency (UKBA) visa!
No- Get a passport. This can be accomplished through the Bureau of Consular Affairs at: http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html This process can take 4-6 weeks and will cost approximately $160.
Do I need a Visa?
You need a visa from the UKBA if you are staying in the UK for longer than 3 months. This process can take 12 weeks, not including unnecessary setbacks, so be prepared to apply at least 3-4 months early. Here is the UKBA website: http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/
The process includes making an application, undergoing a biometrics appointment at a certified Application Support Center, and sending in all of the necessary documentation.
What the UKBA website fails to make clear is that if you are applying from the US, the easiest way to apply, get a biometrics appointment, and have the visa taken care of on time is by creating an application online. To apply online use this website: http://www.visa4uk.fco.gov.uk/
The visa cost will vary by type.
2) Gather the Necessary Documentation
Necessary documentation can vary based upon the passport or type of visa required of you.
Passport:
-Proof of Citizenship
-Photo Identification
Visa:
-Evidence of the Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies Form
-Evidence of Adequate Funds
-Passport
-Birth Certificate
-Photograph (printed professionally and adhering to the specifications of the UKBA)
3) Pray for Mercy from the UKBA
As I have been told: be patient with the Brits- they do bureaucracy different- about 100 years behind...Be calm, and carry on. It will work out if you are determined.
Depending on what type of trouble you run into, here are some points of contact to keep in mind:
-Your State Senator or Representative
-US and UK Embassies
-World Bridge (a last-resort service which charges exorbitant amounts of money, but is the only way to access your visa once it is in the hands of the UKBA)
Any questions about this process I would be happy to answer! Three days until I roll across the pond, CHEERS!
