After about ten hours of much needed sleep, we headed to the Vienna train station to catch our 8 a.m. train to Ljubljana, Slovenia. The ride was not unbearable, there were unbelievable views of the Austrian Alps, and all of the small towns in the mountains were adorable. Walking to our hostel was not so beautiful, although we were located in a very nice area of the city, we encountered many hostile glares from the locals, and we think some guy tried to spit on us...welcome to Slovenia!
In other news, Fluxus Hostel was really cute, we were in an eight bedroom and connected to our room was a six bedroom- very cute IKEA decor, and the staff was very pleasant. We were thrilled to do our laundry and have some time on the internet before heading out to dinner. Since we were in Slovenia, we decided to try some traditional Mexican cuisine...? It was fabulous! We got our fix of Mexican food (although, sadly, no Mexicans worked there) and music and then we walked around by the river. The view was gorgeous, and the little cafés and bars lining the water were so cute.
The next day we went to the Ljubljana Zoo to see some Slovenian wildlife. After some trouble finding the 'Zoo Bus' stop we made it to the Zoo, which was not at all what we expected. The zoo was basically situated on the side of a mountain so to get to some of the exhibits we had to hike up a hill and then stand on a look out over the side and try to locate an animal that was pretty far away. At first, we thought that was awesome that they had such great habitats, but then we saw some very sad looking cages for other animals. The slovenian monkeys were especially entertaining, teasing eachother and putting on a show for us. At the end of our day at the zoo we realized that another zoo bus was not coming for about three hours so we decided to walk back to the hostel.
Once we returned from our nature hike/haunted forest/day at the zoo we took a little break down by the river. Nicola and Beth went shopping and I chatted on the phone. We took a little trolley-train up the hill to the Ljubljana castle, which was the first castle of the trip, and climbed to the top of the tower to look out over the city. The view was incredible! We bought some souvenirs in the gift shop and took the train back down, where we returned to the same Mexican restaurant as the night before for dinner!! We went back to the hostel and attempted to get some sleep before boarding a train at 2 AM for Venice. Although Ljubljana was not so friendly at first, the zoo and the castle more than made up for the rough start...now on to Italy!
Thanks again for checking in on us!!
Lots of Love,
Amber
