Classes have started which means things have gotten pretty boring and are very similar to being back at Western. Other than the whole I'm-definitely-in-a-foreign-country thing, there's really no escaping that.
I'll just give brief bits of news from my life:
I switched out of my Postdramatic Theatre class and into a class titled Writing about the Great War, which was a really good class, I went to it yesterday. The only thing I'm worried about is that it seems like the tutor (that's what they call the seminar leaders, not professors) has been doing this whole teaching thing for quite awhile and is going to be quite strict about essays and things, so that worries me a little, but I'm hoping I'll be able to find a topic interesting enough that I'll be excited to write the essays.
I'm in a Special Author class that I need in order to graduate from Western, and it is a class which people take in the fall and then spend spring and summer terms writing their dissertation (which is their senior thesis). I was told that although I will not be here in spring and summer, that I would still be required to write the dissertations, but instead of getting like 9 months to write it, I have until I leave in December. I went in to talk to my advisor about it yesterday, basically asking if I would be graded on the same scale as all those people who have all school year to write it and would I still be required to write the small essay that the other people in my course are writing. She didn't know but said she would investigate it for me. I was hoping to have heard back from her today, but no such luck. Hopefully tomorrow.
My flatmate had her birthday on Sunday so we threw a little 'surprise' birthday for her. She turned 19 (so young!), I made my mac and cheese, and it was decent considering the interesting situation (small oven, no casserole dish, English cheese). We ate, had cake, and then had a dance party (of sorts).
I made stir fry for the first time last night! It was quite delicious if I do say so myself. Egg noodles with red pepper, broccoli, and carrots, with soy sauce. Then my friend Athena and I attempted to make cake for the club we're in. The cake looked quite tasty, but the icing turned out tasty but not that pretty. I never checked the bake sale, I hope it sold…
Speaking of the clubs I've joined, I'm not sure if I've talked about them at all. I have joined a club call RAG which stands for Raising and Giving. They put on events and donate the money to either one of their three main charities, or a special event for a different charity. The three charities are an Alzheimer's charity (helps pay for care, research for a cure etc), 100% Children (international children's charity), and Milele Forever (helps children in Kenya I believe with the costs of education). The cake stall was today, there are some music nights, pub quizzes (the last one raised ₤400 in like 2 hours, so that's really good). And I get a weekend all expenses paid to Cardiff (capitol of Wales) to do some fundraising.
I've also joined the radio station here at Sussex. I'm the music team, so I'll listen to lots of cds and rate them and help decide what will get played during the music time. I'll also probably have to attend some concerts. It shouldn't take up too much time, but I hope that it will be a good experience. It's something I never got the chance to do at Western, so it'll be a completely new experience.
Other than all that, I've just been hanging around campus and in Brighton, although my goal for the next couple of days is to figure out the weekends that I will be traveling. I have convinced my flatmate (who can actually speak French) to accompany me to Paris, and I think it will hopefully end up being a group trip down there! And some of my friends want to explore around England, so we'll do that too. I am also trying to plan where I am going to be traveling before coming home after school is over- I want to make it to Scotland and/or Berlin in my travels.
Oh! In really exciting celebrity news, my friend Athena and I saw David and Victoria Beckham out shopping in Brighton while we were. It was quite exciting... we've told everyone.
My flatmates are making a 'traditional roast dinner' right now and it smells fantastic. There is pork with apple stuffing in the oven right now. And there will be some delicious veggies. I'm going to go be social now. I will blog more later.
