Made it to Burro Biking by 7.30 this morning for the trip up to the top of Death Road. It took over an hour - which is because it starts at over 5000m. We got to the top and kitted up with all of our protective gear including a full face helmet, got briefed by our instructors before setting off. The first part was all asphalt and pretty easy going...though my bike wouldn't go fast enough :(. For the rest of the 64km, it was all off road, down some pretty steep and rocky paths that had absolutely zero barrier between the edge and massive ravines. There were more than a few memorials along the way where careless or unlucky tourists had gone over the edge. It was insane! In our group there were four English guys that just gunned it downhill. Brad kept up with them, and I came in a little behind...except on the uphill parts where I beat most of them because I was more used to the altitude. It was SO much fun!!! I almost came off a few times, but managed to stay seated the whole way. The ride only took three hours, after which we say down for a beer to celebrate still being alive :). After beers we went to a local hotel where we had a buffet lunch, more beers and a swim. While I was relaxing on a lie low I got eaten alive by little gnat things that I didn't even feel... And now I seriously look as though I have chicken pox. Anyhow, after relaxing, we had to endure a three hour trip back to La Paz. Not surprisingly, Harj and I needed to stop for the ladies room after so many beers. We found one in a little truck stop, and after paying 1 boliviano to get in, we found toilets with no walls! We were so desperate we both shut our eyes. We finally got back to the city and had hot showers before hitting a steakhouse for dinner. Sabi and Harj wanted to go out to a club at another hostel as Sabi wanted to meet up with one of the english guys on the ride. They convinced me to go based on the fact the club was only open until 2 and it was midnight by the time we finished dinner. Got to the "wild rover" and chatted with other travelers including a really lovely Irish couple who are traveling to Australia in april - so I invited them to stay with me when they came. I was so glad to get home by 2 after such a massive day! I was asleep before my head hit the pillow.
