6th & 7th of May
Today we were leaving to go to Amsterdam. After breakfast we met the group then caught a local bus to the train station. We only had to wait a short time before getting our train to Antwerp then we changed trains to Amsterdam. We arrived into Amsterdam around 1.30pm and then we had a short walk to our hostel. The hostel was in the famous red light district, which was going to be interesting. Amsterdam seemed nice on the way there but as soon as we got to our hostel you could tell we were defiantly in the red light district. There was a lot of blokes wondering around, looking like they were up to no good. Other than that it was a good area to be in as there it was close to the city centre.
After we checked in and again I was sharing with my drinking buddy Jo, we went for our orientation walk through the city centre. Tim then left us to our own accord. Jo and I decided we were knackered after the days travelling and decided to go over and get a beer, whilst the others went to find something to eat. It was a great little spot, which is where a lot of the uni students frequent, and you could sit there and people watch. Jo and I had a couple of beers and got to know each other a little better before going back to the hotel to refresh and met the group for dinner.
Whilst waiting for the group we had a beer in the bar down stairs of the hostel. It was a good bar, which had an beer garden that backed onto one of the alleyways with the windows. We went to dinner at a place not too far from the hotel, then came back to the hostel and had a couple of more drinks before calling it a night.
The next day, Jo, Dan and I went and looked at some of the sights. We first went to Anne Frank's house, which was still pretty much in its original form except for a few modifications. I was amazed going through the house and seeing how they lived during that time. Afterwards we decided to get one of the boat down the canal to the Van Gough Museum. I wasn't that enthralled with this museum basically because I have no real interest in art, but also because there were just so many tourists there.
Afterwards Dan and I decided to go back to the hostel. I went a read my book for a little while then went down to the bar for a couple of beers before meeting the group for dinner. We ended up going to a place called Casablanca's. The food was really good but the music was so bad that it was sending us to sleep. We played a couple of games of pool then headed back to the hostel where Jo and I continued on and played some more pool.
