Today we had to get up at 4am as we were going to watch the sunrise over Angkor Wat, but it was not only really cold at that time of the morning it was very overcast so there wasn't much of a sunrise to see. The atmosphere there was an amazing feeling though. It was very eerie. We sat and drank coffee, which the local kids brought over to us, until it got light then our very funny local guide Mr Pallin took us through Angkor Wat.
Walking through this magnificent temple I was completely amazed by the beauty of this place. Even though there was a lot of tourists wandering around it still had a very serene feeling to it. After our guide Mr Pallin took us through the main parts of the site we were able to explore on our own.
After spending a significant amount of time at Angkor Wat we moved on to another temple, which I can remember the name of but I think they called it the "Women's Temple" as it was built out of a pink sandstone rock for a queen or female god of some sort. As soon as we arrived we were hounded by the vendors trying to sell us stuff, but I just said "No." and kept walking, dragging Susan with me.
There were so many Korean tourists at this temple so it was really hard to take pictures without them getting in the way. Dam tourists! It was quite a pretty temple with all the intricate carvings in the sandstone but the Khmer Rouge, which left a lot of empty spaces, had stolen most of the statues. Mr Pallin jokingly told us that a female Japanese tourist had stolen them. It was quite funny especially considering there were a lot of tourists around us at the time.
When we went to leave the bus wouldn't start and it was a really hot day so we hoped that it would start, as we didn't want to be stuck out here for hours on end in the blistering heat. Thankfully they got it started and we headed off to our next spot, the Landmine Museum.
I had seen enough death and destruction on this tour to last me for a lifetime and decided not to go in. Di also felt the same so we stayed outside with the bus and waited for the group. Afterwards the group was going to go to do a tour at the floating village. Knowing I was coming back I decided to sit this one out and go and rest back at the hotel and do my washing.
I met up with everyone again at the pool around 6.30pm and walked into the Khmer Centre to have dinner at the "Temple Club".The "Temple Club" was a great place to try the local Khmer food and also experience the local Khmer dance. Still very touristy it had a great atmosphere and the service and food was really good. Still exhausted from the early start, Susan and I caught a tuk-tuk back to the hotel, but not before getting an ice cream.
