Los Angeles & Coastal California
Sam's & Libby's Highlights & Impressions
• Pin trading at the Disney parks has become a new favoured activity
•Spending our weekly pocket money on trip memorabilia and outlet shopping.
• Multiple rides on Disney’s California Screaming - 40x (massive roller coaster); Maliboomer - 25x (vertical sling shot), Hollywood Tower of Terror - 4x (vertical drop), Splash Mountain - 30x (floating logs), Space Mountain – 5x (roller coaster in the dark night sky) & Thunder Mountain Railway – 20x (train roller coaster)
• New Disney rides which have impressed us including Mullholland Drive – 30x (small scale roller coaster), Grizzly River Run – 15x (white water rafting) along with some interactive target shooting rides (that dad won) and of course the rocking ferris wheel that had the whole family squeemish
•We went to a baseball game and saw the Anaheim Angels (LA) vs. Indians (Cleveland) but sadly the Angels lost 9-2 and much to our disappointment only 1 ball was hit out of the park. We had great seats just past 1st base and picked up some souvenirs from the game including Angels caps but no balls were hit our way.
Hi All from Los Angeles
The Disney roller coasters and rides have nothing on the stress involved when driving LA’s spaghetti of 10 lane freeways - scary - fast – crowded and a life shortening experience. How one was able to master freeways before the introduction of ‘navman’ is absolutely beyond us however we managed to navigate our mean blue mustang convertible around the busy freeways on our return to LA on Sunday … you’d think the roads might be abit quieter on Sundays but we’d suggest you think again.
Our weekend cruise took us south towards San Deigo on the old 101 coastal highway - stopped at various locations - found Moana Gifts, a NZ art & craft shop at Solana Beach and cruised a roadside market at Ecinitas. Carlsbad by the Sea offered chill out time & outlet shopping across the road and a good pool.
Sunday’s return to LA took us to Santa Monica - really disappointing as there was smog everywhere and it was impossible to see more than a few miles ahead. Had thought we would head to Hollywood but with the heavy pollution we decided it wouldn't be worth the already enduring trip.
Our return to Disneyland this week has enabled the kids to significantly multiply their experiences on their most favourite rides and thrills and in true Dutch style extract maximum benefit from the Disney dollars spent. With a day still left at Disney tomorrow ahead of our night departure there is still time to improve on their already impressive stats.
We took in a local baseball game last night in amongst 40,000 vocal fans which we all enjoyed despite the poor Angel result. There was loads of festivity & action and a colourful experience for us all. The crowd went “manic” when a ball came into the seated area – it was every person for themselves, people wrestling on the ground just to claim a game ball and the trophy which they kept!.
We have been made to feel extremely welcome throughout our stay here in the States and we often comment how safe and unthreatened we feel here, we have not seen or experienced any agro of any kind although LA airport is probably the closest thing to that feeling of ‘hustle’ that requires that little bit of extrasensory ‘travel awareness’.
Tomorrow (Thursday) we’re out of here and winging our way to London from where we’ll drive upto Yorkshire to Kate & Dave’s for the weekend and week before we venture off on our planned route of Europe … so till then it’s again over & out …
