Delhi
Once again I found myself back on the Hogworts Express this time bound for Delhi. We shared a 4th berth cabin with an Indian Lady, her father and daughter and whilst James slept, i had my first Hindi lessons. This journey was a mere 4 hours.
i had heard that Delhi was a much more modern city, yet when we slowely chuged into Delhi station, pas the many slum area's (all equipped with satelite dish - EACH), i spotted at least 3 people squatting at the side of the tracks defficating. Thankfully, our stop was New Delhi.
On occasion throughout our time here, James and I have wondered into these local neighbourhoods where there is little or no sanitation. The smell of human excrement is so wretched that i have nearly vomited into my own hands.
Delhi is fairly modern compared to everywhere else we have been to, however there still seems to be confusion by many of the locals on how to use an escalator at the Delhi metro which is relatively new.
This metro system is clean and spacious and much needed here in this huge city. we are currently staying in Gurgaon, a state just outside Delhi and where 5 people died on Monday night alone due to road traffic accidents. Our home stay is delightful and we have been served the best breakfasts to date.
it takes us an hour everyday to get into Delhi/New Delhi using the metro and if you go out of rush hour its relaxing and efficient. However, trying to get on or off the carriage during rush hour is like a scene from a disaster movie titled "Absolute Chaos".
Our observations so far in Delhi have been babies in eyeliner. Not children, not toddlers but babies in arms wearing thick, black charcoal eyeliner. There have been no prams nor push chairs either but that goes for all of the places we have been to so far. No matter where you go, here are things you will see
1) Spitting, ggrrrr
2)Stray Dogs everywhere (Agra have the skinniest)
3)Men urinating at the side of roads
4)Litter, especially plastic bottles
5) people with physical deformities begging
6)men holding hands or hugging (sober) Its a guy thing !!
