Thailand seems to have worked some magic on me. I have been here for six weeks and not managed to update my blog! Must be a good sign.
I spent two days in Bangkok. This was very exciting, bustle, noise, tradffic, markets, strange script on all the signs and Wats with gleaming gold and Buddah statues in all directions. The grand palace is aptly named, fantastic sigts (and photo oportunities) around every corner.
The next two weeks were spent near Sing Buri, a small town about two hours drive north of Bangkok. This was a dramatic change, very rural and incredibly peaceful, especially in contrast to Bangkok. We stayed in a small collection of rooms in a complex run as a home stay. A hectic programme ensured that we had a taste of many aspects of Thai culture, highlights were learning some meditation techniques, a temple stay where we "work shadowed" a monk. and a cookery lesson.
The third week was a camping and trekking (treklet) week. We were taken to a very quiet national park (about 300 visitors per month). There was a little walking (but very high temperatures) and some interaction with the Karen hill tribe. I found just enough waterfalls to keep me going!
After all this culture we were taken to Ko Samet. An idyllic island, white sand and warm sea, but little internet access (my only excuse). Obviously i had to try some snorkelling, saw many fish that I'm unable to identify, including one rather large one that I treated with due respect and headed back to the beach.
