Arrive in Darwin and suddenly experience the wet season! Torrential rain and very hot and humid. We leave early in the morning for a tour which takes in Lichfield national park and part of Kakadu. We see crocodiles, tropical rain forest, sandstone escarpments, Aboriginal art and sacred sites not to mention many birds. Swim in waterfall plungepools (too high for the crocs to reach apparently) and camp in the bush (but with showers and toilets, a bit soft!) We return overnight to Darwin to find it is still raining! We leave early the next morning with news that there is a cyclone moving in, we escape in time and head south for Alice Springs. A lonnnnng drive south, visit Katherine gorge, thermal springs, Daley Waters outback inn, and Devil's marbles (strange red rock formations) before reaching Alice.
A day off in Alice was a welcome day off doing nothing. It was very hot, saw Royal Flying Doctors museum and some art galleries.
Heading for Christmas in the red centre. Uluru (Ayer's rock) KataTjuta (the Olgas) King's canyon and Helen creek. Many surprises especially very lush tropical vegetation in places, kangaroos, howling dingos and very off road driving!
Driving south to Adelaide makes one appreciate that Australia is really a very BIG country!! We stay overnight in a cave (hobbits spring to mind) at Coober Pedy, an opal mining town and the setting for the mad Max films.
Adelaide seems very clean and pleasant, quite cool compared to Alice but very sunny. It is possible to take a short tram ride to Glenelg which looks nothing like it's Scottish namesake!
I am off to Perth for new year then on to Malaysia.
HAPPY NEW YEAR, see you in 2009!!
