Quite a few things to report since I last got organised with a computer.
I finished work with CVA. I really enjoyed my time with them and learnt a bit about australian wild life too. Although I was sad to leave my friends in newcastle I was excited about the Jillaroo school in Tamworth.Trains here seem quite cheap and run on time.
Arrived in Tamworth and checked in to the YHA along with several other wannabe cowgirls. In the morning we were collected by staff from Leconfield, the old bus got us through the 1.1/2 hr journey into the hills with no problems. It was a lovely setting, rolling hills and woodland in all directions, no internet or mobile phones for 11 days!! There were 20 of us of various nationalities.
Day one involved a quick tour, then lassooing and whip cracking. I only managed to catch a static target but had fun. Day two saw us meeting our horses and learning to deal with saddles and bridles, then actually getting on horseback. The emphasis was on safety and control rather than style and speed!
Weather on day two was ok so we had to muster some steers. Fortunately the staff and their dogs knew what they were doing, we moved the relevant cattle into the enclosure amidst much shouting and other excitement. No lassoos or whips just riding over the hills and trying to stay on the right side of the beasts.
Other highlights of the course were fence consruction, sheep shearing, swimming with horses and more mustering. The staff and other students were all very friendly so we were all sad to finish. A farewell party was deemed essential.
Next stop was Nerang, south of Brisbane, to look up Gary from uni days. I had a great time and was made very welcome. Amazing coast and hills inland.
My latest trip has been a 3day sail round the Whitsundays, the stufff of day dreams.
