Alison's African Adventure
Hello everyone!!! I hope that you are all well and enjoying the sunny british weather!!! Finally got a bit of sun today which is really good!!!
I haven't emailed since Zanzibar so will do a quick update....
After staying at Kendwa for three nights we traveled back down to Stone Town, I went on a Spice Tour which was pretty boring, the guy took 10 minutes to explain to us all the different uses of black peppercorns!!! We then went to see the sight of the ancient slave market which now has a Christian Church built on top of it. Was very errie to see the chambers beneath the site, quite harrowing really. After seeing the slave market site we viewed a few more of the sites of Zanzibar, seeing the Fort and House of Wonders (called so because it was the first building to have electricity on the Island). I then took a boat over to Prison Island where we fed the giant Tortoises, some over 100 years old and weighing 300 kilos!!! Later that evening we ate in Mercurys restaurant overlooking the harbour.
Got the Ferry back the next morning, was so choppy again it was unbelievable, people were being sick left right and centre - definitely not one for you mum!!!
We then left Dar and had two nights of bushcamping, so much fun - not!!! Then we crossed the border into Malawi. We stayed for two nights at the Chitimba Beach Campsite on the shores of Lake Malawi, eager for a shower we learnt that the generator had burnt down the day before and there was no power and no running water. A lot of people went into the Lake but there are a few nasty worms that burrow under your skin so I decided against that!!!! It would be living inside me until I got back and I don't think I could handle that!!! Went to see the local school, Malawi is the second poorest country in the world, they have absolutely nothing. On the wall was a list of all the children that were orphaned through AIDS, a staggering 3/4s of the parents were infected. we also went to see the orphanage and the local witch doctor who read some of the others bones. the guy wanted loads of money so i didnt bother. we all did a dance with him, bit of a scary bloke though!!
We left on the third day and traveled again further south to Kande Beach, an Overlanders paradise, on our way we picked up fancy dress costumes from a market where the guys were desperate to sell us their most hideous clothes!! Every overland truck that travels through must stop off here!!! We bought clothes for people whose names we had pulled out of a hat. I was dressed in a real fetching orange/red monstrosity with a red straw hat. Our tour leader had an 80s leotard and our driver a beautiful blue tutu!!! Coupled with this we had made the most lethal punch EVER!!!! More people were sick from the punch than from the Zanzibar Ferry, over half of us!!! (of course including myself!!!)
That brings us to the huge hangover that was yesterday, some people didn't surface at all and our numbers were pretty depleted by tea time. We had had a pig slaughtered in the morning and had it spit roasted for dinner, was delicious!!
Then today, the weather has brightened up so looks like it could be a sunbathing day before tomorrow heading down to Blantyre and then on to Zimbabwe.
Take it easy everyone!!!
PS finally got some pics on here so checkout my photo album!!! Didn't getthe chance to putthe captions on butthere are animals in most of them, bit like wheres wally!!!!
