Project #2: Jurien Bay
My second project I was assigned to was in Jurien Bay, about four hours up the coast from Perth. Our project was cleaning up marine debris and debris assessment AKA clean up litter on the beach and chart/record random 100 meter sections to assess what type of garbage was accumulated the most. Our project partner for this was DEC-The Department of Environmental Conservation.
All in all it was a great week. The beaches apart from the litter were some of the most beautiful I'd ever been on, the weather was fantastic, and everyone really seemed to enjoy themselves.Over the four days we worked on the beach the ten of us picked up over 1500 pounds of debris!!It's pretty incredible the amount of trash some of the beaches had accumulated. Most of what we found was what one would expect: fishing nets, lobster cages, an immense amount of rope, lots of bottles and cans, tires, flip flops etc.
One of the coolest moments on this project was the second morning we were there, I glanced over to the sea and two dolphins were swimming along the coastline.they proceeded to "follow" along with us for about fifteen minutes. One of the most un-cool parts of this project was the amount of flies and ticks L.
Upgrade!, our accommodations for this project seemed like the Four Seasons compared to the last, and with that we were staying at a trailer park/camping center. We had our own rooms (first time in a month, oh the things you take for granted), a huge kitchen, community center room for eating, ping pong, lounging etc.Yahoo, we also had indoor bathrooms and showers! There was also a great fire pit; however, a rugby team staying there the week previous had apparently been a bit overserved because they had burnt all the chairs and tables surrounding the fire pit in celebration!!I don't know how they were overserved because we went to the local pub and were given one drink because they were getting ready to close at the ripe hour of nine o' clock!
It was a good week, capped off with a great weekend! We got back Friday, went to dinner and sampled a couple local watering holes.Saturday we hit the beach all day as it was smokin' hot here!
This next week, my last week in Perth will be spent on a local project.
