We did it! It only took 4.5 hours to climb up and another 3 hours to get back down again. Walking was a bit of a problem for a fews days afterwards but I'm so glad we decided to climb it.
We took a bus up to the Fifth Station which left us 1,400 metres to go. A Slovenian guy from our hostel joined us for the trek. As we were climbing out of season we were pretty much the only people on the mountain and the stations positioned further up were all closed.
The climb was much harder than I expected as the lack of oxygen made the final assent extremely slow going and tiring. It was also bloody freezing. The views from the top were amazing and worth all the effort!
By the time we got back down it was pitch black (yes I did have a torch) and everything was closed for the night. Our hostel was about 30 mins drive away and there was no obvious way for us to get back. We were just about to resign ourselves to the fact that we might have to walk and thumb a lift when a car appeared and the driver agreed to take us back. He even refused any payment at the end. The bloke deserves a medal.
A great day!!
