We had fallen a little behind on our travels so decided to pick up the pace a little. Leaving good times behind us we planned our farewell to Nicaragua. It was going to be a huge journey to get to our ideal destination which was on the North coast of Honduras (basically an entire country away) so we decided to break it up with a stop in Somoto, a sleepy border town. After enduring possibly the worst bus ride yet, including 2 breakdowns & the constant attempts of locals to watch the Steven Seagal back catalogue on a DVD player that didn't work, we arrived. Nothing much to report from Somoto, nice enough town but basically shut down by the time we arrived, so we planned to get an early bus onwards. A fairly unpleasant overnight bout of travellers tummy was added to by an early morning electricution in the shower (see it's not all good times) which set us up for the day. Our main plan was to avoid a night in the capital of Tegucigalapa as it is a crime hot spot (but a great scrabble score) so we set off at 6am & arrived there around lunchtime. Knowing there were several bus companies & stations we blindly picked one & got a cab to the station.....ah how the Gods were smiling on us! We booked our tickets feeling a little miffed by the $29 price (compared with the usual £3 or $4 fare) but as we approached the doors all our doubts fell away. Reclining seats, air con, free snacks & drinks, TV's & rarest of all- an onboard toilet! Somewhere someone was watching over us so we basked in the moment & soaked up the classic that is Lethal Weapon 3! Hours later we arrived at La Ceiba, which is basically a connection town for the ferry, & checked into a fairly sketchy hostel with a proprietor who wanted us to dance & corridor based bunks......how we longed to be back on our magic bus! We might have slept differently if we had known of the adventure ahead! (Suspense builder - thank you Dan Brown)
