After spending so long in Bolivia, one of (if not the) poorest countries in South America, it makes a nice change to be in the slightly wealthier Peru. Arequipa, the 'whitewashed' city is one of those places were this is particularly obvious. We arrived off our night bus early in the morning, and caught a taxi to the hostel. After settling in we set off for breakfast (an amazing fruit salad- I'm really going to miss the fruit here!) and to explore the city. The buildings are beautiful, and it probably has more churches and palaces than just about any other city in South America. It is surrounded by three snow capped volcanoes, which provide a stunning backdop from the plaza. Our three days there were spent wandering the city and the surrounding areas, going up to the mirador and exploring the buildings, playing lots of card games and enjoying the fact that just about every other shop in Arequipa is a cake shop.
